Bio

Lea Sirk was born on 1 September 1989 in Koper. Lea Sirk started her musical education at the age of five. She studied the flute at the Conservatoire de musique de Geneve in Switzerland she has been singing for many years. Her first major appearance was at the Prince of Venice, where she performed as a winner of the Veseli Tobogan in the Primorski region. In 2004, she performed at the FeNS festival with the song "Kitarist" , and a year later on the New scene of the same festival with the song "Pustite me živeti". In 2005, she received the prize for the most promising singer at the international soloists and orchestra competition in Cologne.

She became known to the wider Slovenian public by participating in the 3rd Season of the Bitka talentov. She managed to get to the finals, where she was beaten by Eva Černe. After participating in the Bitka talentov, she opened the door to the major Slovene music festivals. In 2007, she performed in Melodije morja in sonca in the duet with Jasno Jug, in 2009 has released her debut single "Kaj bi rad" and competed in the Eurovision preselection EMA 2009 (Znamenje iz sanj, 9 place), 2010 (Vampir je moj poet, 10 place) and 2017 (Freedom, did not qualify to the final). In 2012 she took part at Slovenska popevka with "Čudovit je svet" for which she received a prize for the best interpretation. In 2011, she took part in Misije Evrovizije as a member of the Leaparfume Group, but was eliminated after the first appearance.

Her participation in the show Znan obraz ima svoj glas (Your Face Sounds Familiar) left an indelible mark on viewers, as Lea was the most convincing through her transformations into famous world performers, including the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest winner, Salvador Sobral.

She also sings a lot as the backing vocalist vocalist (she has accompanied Tinkara Kovač at the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen in 2014, ManuElla in Stockholm 2016 and sang with Nina Pušlar at the EMA 2011), and she also writes songs. Between 2012 and 2014 she sang in the house band of Moja Slovenija. She also participated in two seasons of the Parade broadcast on Television Slovenia.

Since 2001, Lea has been participating in numerous music competitions at the national and at the international level, and received many gold awards and first prizes. In 2014 she released her first album, Roža, which featured singles Ura je 8 and Tako je. Lea, a mother of two girls, has been building her soloist singing career in parallel with her other responsibilities, with a sense of determination.

"My song is modern and a little bit innovative. It speaks about the time of virtuality in which we live, and how do I find myself at this time: what are the problems that I face and what I want to do to live a normal, unburdened life. I did not expect to win, but I believe in my song, I know exactly what I wanted to say in it. I never imagined that my song would become a joke all over Slovenia. At the gas station, people bought a candy bar and said, "Thank you, no," and others started singing "Hvala, ne, ne". "That was it's really 'a sensation'. And that's also my purpose, since I'm funny, weird, and I like being different so that the feelings are good. I was really prepared, at every second I knew what would happen on the stage, I did not leave anything to chance. Vocally I made the song so I can easily perform it at three o'clock in the morning, so - the feelings are beautiful, but I'm looking forward to what is waiting for me and I want to prepare well for another great performances"

Asked whether she would sing at the contest in Slovenian, Lea replies that she must present her entry at the Eurovision in the language she sang in the national final, but she will try to include some Portuguese or English words in the lyrics. At the national selection Lea was joined by the backing-vocalist Karin Zemljič and dancers Karin Putrih, Veronika Škrlj, Anja Moderndorfer and Tajda Kožamelj.

Interview

Slovenia's Eurovision hopes this year rest on the shoulders of Lea Sirk and her immensely likeable, stop-start-bop Hvala, Ne! Lea had a quick chat with ESCKAZ and discussed her entry, as well as everything she'll be up to in the run-up to the Contest in Lisbon and beyond.

"I really didn't expect to win," admits Lea, still glowing from her song's triumph at EMA, the Slovenian national selection, at the end of February. "That was my fourth time doing it, so it was a lovely surprise. Hvala, Ne! was actually recorded for my forthcoming album and was submitted for EMA just with the aim of introducing it to the Slovenian public, so it was really unexpected." Even as the votes poured in from the juries, Lea continued to presume she wouldn't win. "I was much more confident and ready NOT to win."

Now she has won, she is Lisbon-bound and will perform Hvala, Ne! in the second semi-final on 10th May. However, she is focussed on only two things – enjoying her time in Lisbon the most she can and interestingly, learning Portuguese. "I'm excited about learning the language and I want to do the best I can," she gushes.

Her first foray into Portuguese was her preparation for an impressive impersonation of last year's winner Salvador Sobral as part of the Slovenian television show Znan obraz ima svoj glas (in English Your Voice Sounds Familiar). Unsurprisingly, when the topic of past Portuguese entries comes up, it is Amar pelos dois that she immediately cites as her favourite. As for this year's competition, she confesses she is not yet as familiar with many of the other contenders to seize the crown. "I haven't had time to listen to all of them, but I will meet them in-person at the pre-parties and I'm looking forward to that."

Lea is in most anticipation of what she refers to as "that big stage and so many people watching my performance." In fact, ‘that big stage' is something she is more acquainted with than most – maybe even including Salvador himself – after having already performed twice at Eurovision in the past. Lea provided backing vocals for Tinkara Kovač and ManuElla in 2014 and 2016 respectively, but this time she will step on stage as the main artist.

"It's feels great [to be the main performer this time round]," she says enthusiastically. "I had a wonderful time in both Stockholm and Copenhagen. I learnt a lot of things and I had the opportunity to see what goes into the technical preparation for such a big event. I also had the chance to meet a lot of producers, musicians and very nice people, which meant a lot to me. But now, it is my time and I'm going to enjoy it and go there without being under pressure."

Lea also plans to have to deal with little pressure when it comes to the on-stage presentation of Hvala, Ne! on the big night, as it is unlikely to go through any sort of radical overhaul from its initial incarnation at EMA. "We are going to make a few tweaks here and there, maybe do some fine-tuning, but the concept that we presented at the National Final will essentially be the same – we'll keep it pure and spontaneous," she explains. "The dancers will still be there with me of course, as well as my backing singer off-stage and that's it. I want to keep it simple. So, simple is the order of the day!"

The song itself is "about when I find myself in that kind of fake, virtual world and from my point of view, there are things which I can say no to," she concludes. It would appear that any change in the song's visuals have been met with a firm no, in line with this philosophy.

Lea's final message to fans also focusses on feeling comfortable within yourself and being able to say no when necessary – but not without being respectful to others.

"Please open your hearts, feel the music and don't judge the musicians and performers – just enjoy whatever they have created. And importantly... in life, feel free to say NO when you don't like something or don't want to do something that you aren't entirely comfortable with."

Lea has, on the other hand, said a resounding yes to other engagements – she'll be appearing at the pre-parties in Spain, Israel and the Netherlands. As for what lies ahead for her after Eurovision, the plans sound similarly in the affirmative. "I'll be finishing off my second album and have quite a few concerts coming up." So watch this space.

Six days are left until Lea Sirk and her team leaves for Lisbon. "I think we've done the maximum", says Lea in regards to the final preparations. The performance will remain largely unchanged from EMA time. "It seemed to me to be foolish to change something that people supported and liked. After all, this was a victory, because the combinations of everything seemed to work well. The time for changes will come at the concerts after Eurovision," said Sirk at the press-conference prior to her departure.

She talked about her experiences over the last two months, as well as her expectations and plans for the future. "It was great to get the chance to stand on the stage of the Amsterdam Arena, where many of my idols had performed in the past. This feeling is something I will cherish and remember throughout my musical career and life. Something else that was unforgettable was meeting Waylon, the former singer and guitarist with The Common Linnets – my favourite European pop-country band! I guess it goes to show that anything is possible!". Lea had again defended the choice to sing in Slovenian, adding however, that plan is to finish the song in Portuguese. Always cheerful and full of smiles, Lea had one last surprise up her sleeve for those who gathered to wish her well. She introduced the official Hvala, ne! video, which was directed by Perica Rai and stars Tine Ugrin and Ylenia Mahnič. The video also features a traditional Butale mask, inspired a humorous story by Frane Milčinski – Ježek; one of Slovenia’s best-known satirists and author of many a fairy tale. The video was financed in part by the SAZAS Association.

Creative team working with Lea includes choreographer Erik Bukovnik, producers Tomy Declerque and Gaber Radojevič, stylist Maja Lazar, designer David Hojnik, Head of Press Maruša Kobal, director Nejc Levstik, light designer Črt Birsa, graphic designer Den Baruca and Aleksander Radić, Head of the Delegation. On the big Eurovision stage Lea will be joined by four dancers Karin Putrih, Tajda Kozamelj, Veronika Škrlj and Anja Möderndorfer and Karin Zemljič as backing vocalist.

Lea Sirk, Slovenian’s Eurovision representative, has already brought audiences in Israel and Amsterdam to their feet with amazing live performances of her song Hvala, Ne! as she travels Europe on her promotional tour. The last stop sees her in Spain this weekend, where on Saturday she will appear at the Eurovision pre-party in Madrid.

While she was in the Dutch capital, Lea once again gathered with her fellow competitors, who she had already met at the Israel Calling event just a few days prior, and struck up some new musical friendships.

Always full of smiles and optimism, Lea is looking forward to her fast-approaching performance at the Sala La Riviera hall in Madrid. What’s more, after coming home on Monday, she will be preparing a very special surprise for her followers – so don’t forget to keep an eye on her official website, Facebook and Instagram.

Lea Sirk, the Slovenian representative at this year's Eurovision Song Contest, spent previous weekend on Faial Island, where she filmed a so-called “postcard” that the Eurovision audience will be able to watch just before her appearance on stage.

The ‘Ilha Azul' (‘Blue island'), as Faial is often called because of its countless hydrangea hedges encountered everywhere on the island, is without doubt one of the most charming islands of the Azores.

"Filming the postcard was a real puzzle for me. For three days we were exposed to the nature, which literally played tricks on us," said Sirk with a smile on her face. She explained that they had moody weather: "From the sun to complete downpour in half an hour."

This year, the organizers decided that the artists would record Eurovision cards at various tourist sights of Portugal. Lea Sirk was sent to the Azores. "Despite the weather and all that, I have spent a truly beautiful trip on an island that I would not have known and experienced otherwise. Among other things, I was also very lucky to get a great team that took care of recording my postcard. Relaxed Portuguese are a perfect hit for me," Sirk emphasized.

What she will remember most about her first visit to Portugal as part of the Eurovision Song Contest is the Portuguese language, which she was eagerly learning together with her team and with help from the locals. "On the last day, I already managed to say quite a few many things without making an error. Quite a success, right?" she added, laughing.

The singer, who will perform in Lisbon on 10 May in the second pre-selection event with her song Thank You, No!, now plans to do some dance training and have a bit of rest. "Before I travel to a few other countries across Europe in April, where I'm going to present my song," also announced the Slovenian representative.

"For some years now I wanted to come to Portugal but I had never achieved it until now. That's why I was delighted to be chosen to represent Slovenia precisely in the year that Portugal hosts the Eurovision Song Contest! Nature here is magical and breathtaking. Filming on a volcano was really special. The people were very friendly and the team was very professional and fun. I had a lot of fun in the Azores and I look forward to the next visit to Portugal in May, this time in Lisbon"

Preselection

On 15 September Slovenian broadcaster Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTVSlo) has invited interested songwriters and performers to apply for the participation in the national preselection "EMA".

Applications have been accepted until November 15, 2017. Complete rules and regulations are available here. The authors of the song and performers may be both citizens of the Republic of Slovenia or foreign nationals with the condition that if the authors of the music are citizen of the Republic of Slovenia, performers may be nationals of other countries. Similarly, if the author of the music is a foreign citizen, all performers must be citizens of the Republic of Slovenia. In case of the mixed teams, they should be composed mostly of citizens of the Republic of Slovenia.

The entry should be original and not yet published on the day of application for the selection. All entries must be written for the performance in the Slovene language. If a song is to be performed at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in another language, this version of the song must also be submitted. Entry submission must include: mp3 of the song in Slovenian and mp3 of the song in language of Eurovision performance, lyrics, artist's photo, short biography, completed and signed statement.

108 entries have been received, 18 more than last year. Upon the deadline for submission of applications, the entries will be evaluated by at least three-member expert commission, approved by the Director of TV Slovenia at the proposal of the responsible editor of the TV Slovenia Entertainment Program Directorate. In addition to the submitted songs, RTV Slovenia reserves the right to directly invite any number of authors and / or performers to participate. Up to sixteen songs will be selected by the expert commission to compete in the show. RTV Slovenia has announced participants of the televised stage on 8 December 2017.

The winning track, which will represent RTV SLO at the 63rd Eurovision Song Contest 2018, will be selected at EMA 2018, which will be held in two evenings: semifinal and final. The running order of shows will be determined by the editorial production team of the project. Sixteen songs will be presented in the semifinal show, eight of them will qualify for the final evening - four best, according to viewers and listeners via televoting and the four next best according to the jury. Jury at the semifinal should consist seven members, one of which is a representative of the Entertainment Programming department of Television Slovenia, the organizer of the event. Each jury member shall classify all tracks from the first to the sixteenth place with points from one (best) to sixteen (worst). If two or more compositions have the same total of the points, the higher will be the one that has received several higher ranks of the jury members.

The winner will be decided by 6 juries and viewers with a telephone vote in 50/50 ratio. Each jury member shall classify all the tracks from the first to the eighth place with points from 1 to 8. Six juries will together award 252 points for six best-rated songs (2-4-6-8-10-12). Televoting will also be converted into total of 252 points (12-24-36-48-60-72).

Six juries, each of 5 members, will be as follows:
- Jury of music performers (singers and other artists)
- Jury of music writers (authors of music, lyrics, arrangements) and producers
- Radio Jury (radio editors, journalists, hosts)
- Television jury (editors, directors, choreographers, designers)
- Jury of the Eurovision song contest fans (members of OGAE Slovenia)
- International jury (musicians and songwriters, television and radio producers, journalists, representatives of publishers)
Members of juries should be appointed on the proposal of the Editor-in-Chief of the Entertainment Programming of Television Slovenia by the Director General of RTV SLO. The juries, in assessing the compositions, must base their decision on the artistic, aesthetic, production criteria and the quality of the performance. Names of jury members will be announced during the EMA 2018 final event or in a press release after the event.

This year, Slovenian preselection EMA will be divided into two parts: the semifinal will on Saturday, February 17, and the final one a week later, on February 24. Both evenings will be hosted by Vid Valič.

"My first memories of EMA go back to childhood when Mom said: 'You could watch this.' And we did. It seemed interesting to me, what was happening on the stage. I was fascinated by the fact that there are so great musicians and performers, "recalls this year EMA host.

"The main thing that I found out when I was following the hosts of EMA in the past is that it's not good if there are more than two of them together, because it seems to me that otherwise there is too much interaction. But that's purely mine personal opinion, "emphasized Valič, and continued:" They taught me that I have to emphasize the glamor, because it is a very glamorous event. All musicians and artist who perform on EMA represent the cream of Slovenian music. "

And at the same time, Ema is the musical contest where the winner receives the opportunity to represent Slovenia in the Eurovision Song Contest. "In such competitions, you have to be aware that those who came to the competition have already done very much to come to this moment so that they can be presented to the whole of Slovenia. Therefore, you must not tease them, humiliate them, but evaluate them, because if they were not here, we would have nothing to do, "concluded Valic.

In the final Raiven will join Vid Valič as his co-host. "EMA 2018 is the biggest challenge for me so far, because this will be a new role for me. I am really looking forward to it and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity. There is no event in Slovenia I would rather host than Ema." - Raiven. "I am so looking forward to the final. It is definitely a notch I would like to have on my belt. I will do my best to make everything run smoothly. And Raiven is certainly fearless enough to take on the job." - Vid Valič.

All entries will be presented on Radio Val 202 between 5th and 8th February at 14.40. Each day, four songs will be presented, with artists in short interviews revealing stories about songs, their teams and the expectations of the EMA.

В 2007 году она участвует в Melodije morja in sonca в дуэте с Jasno Jug.

Hvala, Ne!
