Bio

Ari Ólafsson is only nineteen years old, born in 1998. He is relative of the singers Diddú and Paul Óskar, his grandma Ara and the father of Paul Óskar and Diddú were siblings.

He started singing at a very early age and his angelic voice and stage charm soon landed him lead roles in musicals at the National Theatre of Iceland. Amongst other musicals, aged 11, he played a part in Oliver, a musical directed by Selma Björnsdóttir who came second in the 1999 Eurovision Song Contest with the song All Out Of Luck. "I did not know that I had vocal talent until I played that role," Ari told an interview with Fréttablaðið in 2016. He also played in The Wizard of Oz.

He began studying at the Reykjavik Söngskóli after the show, first at the class of Garðar Cortes and then with Bergþór Pálsson. Thirteen years old he sang The Prayer with the Norwegian star Sissel Kyrkjebø in the Eldborgarsal of Harpa Music Hall. He participated twice in the singing contests of Menntaskólinn and Hamrahlíð and competed in Ísland Got Talent and in the first series of The Voice of Iceland 2015. Last year he has performed on the stage of the national final Söngvakeppnin as a backing vocalist.

Last December, Ari received the news that he has been accepted to The Royal Academy of Music in London, the oldest music school in UK and one of the more popular in the world. He plans to begin studies there this autumn.

Priority for his is the family and friends. Music comes in 2nd place. His interests include Singing, drama, dance, football, films and songwriting. He is attracted to good food, fun people and of course music. His favorite food is seafood dish with lobster. He is proud of making parachute jump, where he jumped from a height of 11 thousand feet. He is afraid of larvae and get lost somewhere abroad. He dislikes when people are unnecessary rude and when someone is very busy by themselves.

Ari has always been a big fan of Eurovision and dreamt of representing Iceland in the competition from an early age. He sings all kinds of music from classical to pop, rock and funk, and one of his favourite artists is Stevie Wonder. Ari is also a prolific impersonator and known to be able to master different accents and languages and loves to improvise both in the theatre and music.

"What matters most to Eurovision is how people come together and that music is a powerful tool for creating beautiful moments in the lives of many. I just want to say, it's love and music that brings us all together. And we're all together here and this is a wonderful moment and it's important that a lot of love is in the air and I just want to say thank you very much for this, Iceland. It's so great, I love you so much," Ari said in the comment after results were announced

Thorunn Clausen is an Icelandic actress, singer, song writer and director who studied acting in London and singing and vocal coaching in Copenhagen. She has appeared in numerous plays, musicals, films and TV shows in Iceland and the USA and recently starred in the highly acclaimed American comedy show Documentary Now, which stars among others Helen Mirren, Jack Black and Fred Armisen.

Thorunn studied music and piano from a young age and is a prolific lyricist, having written her own lyrics as well as for other artists like her late husband songwriter and singer Sjonni Brink. Together Sjonni and Thorunn wrote the Icelandic Eurovision entry in 2011. When Sigurjon ‘Sjonni’ Brink sadly and unexpectedly died before the 2011 competition, Thorunn and Sjonni's friends got together agreed that they would carry on and perform Coming Home in his memory. Thorunn has written lyrics for several Söngvakeppnin entries since 2011.

Interview

The 19-year-old Ari Ólafsson has already gathered experience as backing vocalist at the Icelandic national final Söngvakeppnin. However, the idea to take part at the Eurovision Song Contest just occurred to him after a call from the actress, singer and songwriter Thorunn Erna Clausen, who is known for the Icelandic entry song "Coming home", she wrote back in 2011.

It seems to have been the right decision. "It feels amazing!" reveals the singer to the question how he feels being an Eurovision participant. "We aim on having fun and enjoying every moment." Ari sees himself in a good company: "I have listened to all the songs and there are a lot of favorites."

With his entry song "Our Choice" Ari and his mentor Thorunn want to spread the message of "giving love and helping others". "The message is to be a part of the solution and not the problem and to recognize that all people go through pain and that is why we should spread out happiness and not anger and hate. Thorunn Erna Clausen wrote this song and the text, it had been in creation for quite a while."

Even in the busy and challenging days of Eurovision preparation process Ari remains calm and relaxed: "There has been nothing very difficult this." Having Thorunn Clausen by his side seems to be a great support: "It is wonderful! She is so talented and such a good teacher as well."

Ari and Thorunn intend to present an unchanged version of "Our choice" in Lisbon, only the stage presentation directed by Thorunn herself might get "some slight changes".

Some major changes Ari had to make for his official video which shows him walking down the streets in Reykjavik. "It is quite a long story, but the short version is that originally it should have been filmed in Þorlákshöfn at a beach where I was riding a horse. The video would happen backwards. It was a good idea but the horse was so afraid of the waves and I was afraid of the horse so it had to be called off. Instead we did an onetake in downtown of Reykjavik which came out pretty nicely."

Ari has a lot of work in front of him – his Eurovision postcard hasn’t been filmed yet and a possible release of different versions of "Our Choice" is in consideration. Additionally, he plans a lot international appearances before going to Lisbon – he will take part at Eurovision pre-parties in London, Amsterdam and Israel.

However, his future carrier in show business will be put on hold after the participation at the Eurovision Song Contest. "I’m just going to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London."

Latest news

Icelandic singer Ari Ólafsson has recorded his postcard for the Eurovision 2018 Festival in Lisbon. MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) and the Eduardo VII Park were some of the places that received the recordings.

MAAT is an outward-looking museum located on the banks of the Tagus in Belém, the district from where the Portuguese great explorers set off. Proposing a new relationship with the river and the wider world, the kunsthalle is a powerful yet sensitive and low-slung building that explores the convergence of contemporary art, architecture and technology.

Filling a surface of 26 hectares, the Eduardo VII Park is the largest public park in Lisbon. The venue neighbors on Praca do Marques de Pombal and, southwards, on Avenida da Liberdade. The park was initially called the Liberty Park, but as from 1903, when the king of England visited Portugal in order to reinforce the diplomatic relations between the two countries, it has been bearing the name of the king. The garden is located on a fairly high ground, which is why visitors come here often so they can admire the city of Lisbon (or parts of it, anyway). On top of that, given the generous spread of the park, it is often used to cultural and entertainment purposes (fairs, concerts, exhibitions).

The 19-year-old Ara Ólafsson's life has been changed a lot over the two weeks since he won the Söngvakeppnin. Today he was guest of Síðdegisútvarpið.

"It's so much happening in such a short time," says Ari. "Everytime on the move, wakes up every day "oh, what am I going to do today?" But I love it, love such a organized mess". Recently, Ari performed at the finals of Eurovision's national selection in Lithuania, and sang for 20,000 people. "There were also two million people watching, it was a good warming for Portugal," says Ari, who was fond of both country and nation. "Lithuania is an extremely beautiful country, especially Vilnius. I got an extra day and went to the old city, it was completely crazy.".

Recently, Ari has been invited to judge the singing competition in elementary school, Flatóvision. "It reminded me of when I was a little kid and Björgvin Franz was coming to school. I was having fun, but also used the opportunity to convey a message. I told these kids that they were great and what a great competition it was. Emphasized that it is important to cultivate these abilities they possess. ".

Ari says no drastic changes will be made to the stage presentation, but it is still under construction. "There were 20,000 people in Lithuania. In Portugal there are 10,000 people so I'm in a very good workout. "But what about the 250 million people watching on TV?" You do not see them, imagining they're just naked at home. I'm incredibly excited and nothing can stop me enjoying this adventure, "said Ari Olafsson.

Preselection

Icelandic broadcaster RÚV has launched the call for the songwriters to apply to the Söngvakeppnin 2018. Submissions were open until Friday, 20 October at 23:59 at the official website of the broadcaster. The Icelandic broadcaster encouraged artists from all music genres to submit their entries, as they point out the goal of this song contest is to promote diversity. Songwriters must have Icelandic citizenship or permanent resident status in Iceland, but foreign co-authors are allowed as long as 2/3 of the song and 1/2 of the lyrics are by Icelandic composers and lyricists. All songs must be submitted and sung in Icelandic in the semi-finals. However, the performers of the 6 songs that will progress to the final will have the right to sing their entries in the language that they will be using at Eurovision.

The broadcaster will choose 12 of the submitted entries to compete in the two semi-finals of Söngvakeppnin on 10 and 17 February at the Háskólabíó conference hall. Participating songs will be revealed on 19 January. The final evening will be held two weeks later, on 3 March at Laugardalshöll Arena with three songs from each semi-final competing, 6 in total. RÚV has also decided to raise the money prize for the winner from 1 million Icelandic kroner to 3 million.

Samúel Jón Samúelsson also known as Sammi, has been appointed music consultant for the Söngvakeppnin in 2018. Sammi has been prominent figure in Icelandic music life over the past twenty years. He has worked closely with a number of musicians, either as a musician, arranger or co-author. In addition, he operates his own big band, Samúel Jón Samúelsson's Big Band. Sammi has worked as a music director for television shows, theater, ads and films. On the occasion of the participation of the Icelandic team at the European Championship last summer Sammi wrote the song "Áfram Ísland". Sammi will work with songwriters and advises them on recordings and exposures of the act in the race.

"It's important for people to realize that the song does not have to be fully completed," says Birna Ósk Hansdóttir, Production Manager at RÚV. "You can submit a demo version, which will be completed by the contest. It's about entering a song in the race, whether finished or not, before the deadline".

TV presentation of the participants took place on 19 January at 19:40 local time on RÚV channel, at the same day official album of the preselection has been released. Ragnhildur Steinunn, member of the organizing committee says that group of participants this year is very diverce and exciting. Among them are professional football player, nationwide known actress, rocker as well as young performers.

"Today we will present songs and interview participants of the preselection. I'm sure that it will be able to discover new stars, as it happened in the previous years"

Artistic directors of the show are Kata Ingva and Gunnar Helgason. Samuel Jón Samúelsson, music director says: "What makes this competition fun is exactly this diversity. The songs are really good and different".

Swedish singer Robin Bengtsson, who participated in the Eurovision Song Contest last year, will be the guest of the final show of Icelandic Söngvakeppnin, which will be aired by RÚV live from Laugardalshöll on 3 March. Danish singer Emmelie de Forest who won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with the song Only Teardrops and Svala Björgvinsdóttir, winner of the Söngvakeppnin last year, will also perform. Tickets on sale from 30 January here.

Дважды он принимал участие в песенных конкурсах Menntaskólinn и Hamrahlíð, а также испытывал удачу в Ísland Got Talent и первом сезоне The Voice of Iceland 2015.
