Bio

Singer/songwriter from Montenegro Vladimir Vanja Radovanović was born in Belgrade on 28 October, 1982.

He began his singing career in 2004, when he had his first public appearance at "Music Festival Budva" when he received the award for the best debutant of the festival with the self-written song "Dripac". He participated in the same festival in 2005 with the self-written song "Krila olovna", which became a big hit in Montenegro and Serbia. That same year he also performed at the Radio Festival of Serbia, also with the self-written song "Izvini ne menja ljude", which brought him first major award in his career. He competed in Serbian preselection for the Eurovision 2006 Beovizija with "Kad me jednom za te ne bude", finishing 21st.

After participating in various festivals, at the end of 2007 he released the single "Pričaj dodirom" for which a video was made in cooperation with the Institute for Education and Rehabilitation of Persons with Hearing Impairment from Kotor. By the end of 2007, he formed a band with which he debuted at the New Year celebrations in Bar. In mid-May 2008 was released Radovanovic's debut album "Pričaj dodirom". Since it became one of the best-selling albums in Montenegro, Radovanovic was chosen by T-Mobile Montenegro and NOKIA to be the promoter of the new phones. Immediately after that, a series of concerts with a band on squares and in clubs around Montenegro followed, where the song "Takav sam i sad" was presented. In 2009 he had released single and music video for the song "Ne pitaj za mene". By the end of 2010 he released EP "Bez koncepta" featuring three songs "Milo moje" , "Novi Sad" and "Rakija". In the meantime, he prepares new material and also writes songs for many other performers from the region.

In the spring of 2012 in Zagreb, in collaboration with well-known Croatian producer Denis Mujadžić Deniken, under the label "GORATONA", was recorded Vanja's new album, which featured modern guitar sound and a different approach in production and recording. In June was released first single of the album - "Padobran", alongside the music video. The second single "Svi životi moji" - the title song from the album also received music video and was promoted in December. The end of the year was marked by a grand concert held on December 30 in front of the walls of the old town in Budva within the New Year's program. The album was released in March 2016 and also included singles "Prvi pik" - winning entry at the regional competition "Katfest" and "Igra".

Vanja Radovanović is nephew of legendary Montenegrin performer Miladin Šobić, who was active in 1975-1983, but after his sister's death retired from the music career. Since 2013 he has performed a series of concert with the music of his uncle. Radovanovic also performs with his rock'n'roll band VIII2 releasing such songs as Nikšićko ledno, Luda and Odri.

"As an unrealized footballer who, as a kid, dreamed of representing his country, this would come as a nice compensation for childhood dreams. A joke aside, we took the challenge very seriously and each of us gave the maximum. Eurovision participation is an exceptional occasion for me to do something different, an artistic challenge to make a song according to Eurovision criteria, in a way a template, to fit in three minutes, and at the same time to be honest and emotional. I think that this is one of the most beautiful and serious songs I have written so far and that Bole Martinović made a wonderful arrangement. Beside him were involved drummer Ivan Perovic and Goran Antović who worked on a mix and mastering of the song. All in all, 100% Montenegrin product, which we are exceptionally proud of. We will also present the language, not just music. It's more natural. Music is not a book, you do not have to translate it to understand it, but you can understand it no matter which language. It's not excluded that we will make a version in English, but we will sing on our own language in May".

Five backing vocalists will join Vanja Radovanovic on the stage: Ana Masulovic (Belarus 2013), Ivana Vladovic (Montenegro 2015), Lena Kuzmanovic (Montenegro 2015, Serbia 2016), Jelena Djuric (Serbia 2008, 2013, 2016, 2017), and Bole Martinovic, arranger of Inje.

Interview

Vanja Radovanović is the latest artist to speak to us at ESCKAZ. "It feels great to be representing Montenegro at Eurovision! I'm proud to have this opportunity to represent my country," says Vanja.

Vanja won Montevizija in February with the song "Inje", which booked his ticket to Lisbon. "Inje means hoarfrost in English. It is a frost that creeps up on immovable things, but in the case of the song it relates to it creeping up on people's relationships," he explains of his entry, an emotive, traditional Balkan ballad. "I wanted to record an emotional song that I liked, with powerful lyrics and some traditional Montenegrin melodies."

Vanja is also keen to emphasise the importance of him singing in his mother tongue. "It's very important for me for the song to be sung in Montenegrin, because the lyrics are a big part of any song. You don't have to understand the words or all of the lyrics, but you need to be able to feel them." From one listen to the song, it is clear that the emotion and the feeling in the song transcend the boundaries of language.

Vanja has been performing for a number of years. His first notable achievement was his appearance at the Budva Music Festival in 2004, where he won the best debutant prize for his song "Dripac". Performing is in his blood it seems. "The last time I performed at a festival was 12 years ago so it's been a while but I've had a lot of concerts with my band and it's still the number one thing for me."

When it comes to Lisbon, Vanja is eager to return to the city and is enthusiastic about appearing on the famous Eurovision stage. "I'm really looking forward to visiting Lisbon again and having a great time with wonderful people. Plus, the experience of performing on the Eurovision stage and the organisation of course."

However, he is philosophical about his chances of taking the trophy back to his homeland. "I don't like to place a lot of expectation on anything. I'm just going to go with the flow!" he states in a relaxed manner. "I look forward to great weather in May and a lot of great people who know how to enjoy life itself."

The track's video, which seems like an epic three-minute film in itself, was inspired by Rene Magritte's famous painting "The Lovers", Vanja informs us. "It was directed by Gojko Berkuljan and I really love how it turned out. It's very artistic and meaningful – it enhances the song in every sense and they go hand-in-hand together. Like the perfect lovers."

Vanja is slightly coy with regards to the staging and styling of his upcoming performance in May, giving little away. "It will be as artistic as the song and the video are. Simple and beautiful." As to who may be joining him on stage in May, he replies with a playful gleam in his eye, "let me surprise you".

He is still familiarising himself with this year's other entries, but the host nation's submission has already captured his imagination. "I haven't heard them all yet but I love the Portuguese song. There are a lot of good and very different songs and I'm glad music is the most important thing this year." Not only is he a fan of this year's Portuguese entry, but he positively gushes when it comes to speaking of last year's winner and Portugal's most renowned musical traditions. "Salvador Sobral changed things in many ways for all of us and it's really a big thing – the biggest probably. I like Fado very much, especially Amalia Rodrigues."

In terms of past Montenegrin entries, Vanja speaks highly of many. "Sergej and Knez both had good songs, but my favourite is Who See's [Igranka]. Rambo Amadeus' was also great in his own, unique way."

Vanja will be appearing at the upcoming Eurovision pre-shows in London, Tel Aviv and Amsterdam. He believes his team may add a few more to destinations to this itinerary before the schedule is finalised. His philosophy when it comes to his chances of Eurovision success seems to hold firm when it comes to his future plans. "I don't like planning – I just go with the flow. There will be a lot of music for sure.". Vanja's final message to ESCKAZ.com's readers is a similarly positive one.

"Just listen closely and enjoy music and life as much as you can."

Milena Đurđić will be in charge of styling of Vanja Radovanovic at the Eurovision 2018. Milena Đurđić has already built the name beyond the borders of Montenegro.

"After Montevizja 2018, for which I was working for the host Dajan Golubović Pejović Vanja Radovanovic has contacted me with the suggestion to work on styling of his performance for the Eurovision Song Contest. Of course I was happy and with great pleasure accept the proposal, "Milena said earlier and added:

"Vanja is a young music artist with a special artistic style that is successfully developing. I repeatedly listened to 'Inje', with catches attention with both text and music, as well as to Vanja's emotional interpretation. I made several sketches of conceptual solutions, and then we, Vanja, his wife Ivana and I, analyzed, exchanged opinions and, to our mutual satisfaction, understood each other very well, "Đurđić points out.

Vanja Radovanović, who competes for Montenegro, has filmed his postcard in Lisbon at Feira da Ladra, the largest street market in the capital, which is held in the Campo de Santa Clara area.

The artist summed up his walk through the city: "I really enjoyed this experience, we started in front of the Pantheon, we passed by the Church of Santa Engrácia and we ended up in Feira da Ladra, an incredible market. I really enjoy visiting this type of fairs wherever I go and here I was very impressed. In this type of place it is possible to capture the spirit of the city and create a connection with the inhabitants. Lisbon is a beautiful city with amazing people, and I look forward to returning in May!"

The Feira da Ladra is one of Lisbon's oldest markets and over the centuries has evolved from selling unwanted second-hand goods with unknown origins (hence the name of the market) to the present day jumble of antics and random goods. The market today is firmly aimed at the tourist trade with most of Lisbon's residents shopping at the Sunday Feira do Relogio market the largest market in Lisbon. For tourists, the Feira da Ladra is a fun place for an early morning wander and there are bargains to be had hidden amongst all the junk.

In the next three days, a Montenegrin representative at the Eurovision Song Contest will record a video for the song "Inje". The locations for the shootings are Kotor, Stari Bar, Valdanos and Cetinje, and part of the staff will be done in the studio. Unlike previous videos, which most often had a classical tourist character, this video, according to director Gojko Berkuljan, will present Montenegro in a different, fairy-tale, light, through Victorian costumes and timeless story that relies on the ambience of the winning song of "Montevizija". The audience will have the opportunity to see it by March 10 at the latest.

Berkuljan will also be responsible for the stage performance, which will be created visually in a similar tone.

In the meantime, the team is working on rearranging the track that will be representing Montenegro in Lisbon in May, and next week we will hear the final version of "Inje".

Preselection

Montenegro's representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 will be chosen on national final "Montevizija". This is the first time in 10 years that broadcaster Radio Televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) will be using a national final to select Eurovision entrant, last in 2008.

The official rules of preselection were published on November 1, while submission deadline has been set for 15 December. Each performer should be citizen of Montenegro, while no restriction for the nationality of songwriters was implied. Each songwriter could enter up to 2 entries to the competition. The lyrics should be written in the official language in Montenegro. Registration is done by attaching a large white envelope containing a demo record of the entry on USB stick or CD and printed lyrics in five copies. The large envelope should contain smaller, with information on the identity of the author, his biography, as well as the certificate of the competent organization for the protection of copyright and related rights on the registration of the entry, as well as biography of the performer and his certificate of citizenship. The second envelope will only be opened if the entry is chosen to the next stage of the selection. Jury will be evaluating entries on a scale of 100 points with the maximum of 50 points for composition, 30 points for lyrics and 20 points for the production potential.

"For the sake of transparency, it was decided that three members of the jury should be from Montenegro, and we will have two guests in the commission, who are recognized regional personalities in the field of music industry. The main criteria are the quality of the song, the lyrics, as well as the production potential of the song. As demo versions were accepted to the competition, the production potential of the song can be of crucial importance. In this case, the selection committee will perform the most responsible part of the work, relying on the individual experience of the members of the commission and their vision of the production potentials of each composition that passes into the second round, "explained Music Editor of Radio Montenegro and member of the creative team of RTCG Vladimir Maraš

Of the 31 submitted compositions, the five-member jury will select the top five, and as Mićunović points out, they will present their tracks within Montevizija final set for February 17 to take place in Hilton Hotel in Podgorica, when the audience will select the best, becoming representative of Montenegro at Eurovision.

Preselection committee included president Dejan Božović, Ismet Dervoz, Kornelije Kovač, and music editors of RTCG Vladimir Maraš and Slaven Knezović.

On 13 February were presented snippets of the entries competing in Montenegrin preselection Montevizija. Show will be hosted by Dajana Golubović and Ivan Maksimović, and all televote proceeds will be donated to charity.

Montevizija
