Bio

Sennek (Laura Groeseneken) was born on 30 April 1990 and comes from Leuven. The singer-songwriter has already worked on several high-profile musical projects including in 2012 the 50th anniversary celebrations of the James Bond franchise, 007 In Concert, where she performed Tomorrow Never Dies with Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2011-2012 under the nickname Lola, Laura Groeseneken has collaborated with the dubstep and electropop DJ-collective AKS (Addicted Kru Sound), delivering vocals for some of their compositions. The group has also worked with popular Belgian artist Selah Sue, and created an official remix for singer Jamie Lidell.

In addition to singing Laura also plays the melodica and piano and alongside Alex Callier wrote the song Gravity for the Belgian group Hooverphonic. The song became known internationally when fashion label Cacharel used it for one of their perfume commercials. Since 2014 Laura has been performing with with Ozark Henry as keyboard player and singer and together they have appeared at some of Belgium's biggest festivals, including Rock Werchter, which takes place in Belgium every July.

Currently, she is working on her solo career and writes her own songs under the name Sennek. Sennek brings a modern mix of soul, electronics and pop. At the moment she is working on an album with the London producer Dom Howard (Submotion Orchestra).

As her day job, Laura works as a visual merchandiser for IKEA. She is also a vocal coach at the music centre Het Depot in the city of Leuven. At home, music also holds an important place in Laura's heart — the showpieces of her house are two Rhodes pianos. And, not surprising, Laura is a big fan of Scandinavian design and Belgian fashion.

"Every year I watched my uncle Eddy compiling his compilation CDs, he's definitely coming to Lisbon! I really love the songs that have won the contest in recent years. This was what gave me the extra push to do Eurovision. Now, it is once again a real song contest. My favourite song is 1944, Jamala's winning song for Ukraine last year. I like pop songs too. I like listening to the work of Scandinavian pop princesses, so I'm currently crazy about Sigrid's Don't Kill My Vibe!"

In the interview, Groeseneken stated: "In the coming months, I want to work hard to find the correct song. I would like to write it myself, but I will not push songs from others immediately. What kind of song it will be, I do not know yet. It can be a ballad but I just want to be in love with the song. I also want to perform with the act, but I will not dance myself. Maybe I'm going to perform as SENNEK, but that will depend on the type of the song. Perhaps another artistic name will come out of the air. But I'll sing in English. In Dutch, my voice does not sound as beautiful".

A Matter of Time was released on 5 March. Sennek wrote the song with Alex Callier of Hooverphonic and producer Maxime Tribeche from Paris, it was recorded at the ICP Studio in Ixelles. A Matter Of Time is an atmospheric song with a melancholy side and a strong story. "I am very happy with the song, it was the song that I had in my head when I said yes to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest", Sennek told in MNM interview. "During the writing process, Alex's elegant glass teapot was broken, which was something special: the next day we started the song, the first sentence was immediately: "Sometimes things are meant to be broken". The message is: you have to enjoy the moment that is there now because everything breaks at a certain moment".

"The song describes how you can see beauty in transience, how you can find the beauty in something valuable that goes wrong. What an incredible feeling to be here with an own song. It was a great experience to work together with Alex and Maxime, two very talented songwriters. To exchange views and ideas together and to come to a composition that everyone is proud of. The song fits me like a glove: the melancholy feeling, the vocals, the contrast between dark and light... And the message of a song is also very important for its potential to reach people"

Latest news

News and entertainment presenter Danira Boukhriss Terkessidis will be the Belgian spokesperson for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018.

What should appear in the background when Danira announces the douze points? Eurovision fans were offered determine that. May be it is your image will be used and seen by some 200 million people in Europe and far beyond. What should you do? Very simple, send us your best video or photo using the form. Please note, there are a number of conditions. Video material must be a stable image. The images must be HD 16x9 format. People and brands can not be identified in a recognizable way. It must be a photo of Brussels. And the video or photo must be taken after sunset. VRT will choose the three best entries, the final decision is made by you on the Facebook of Een, just before the final. The deadline for submitting is 8 May, 12 noon.

This afternoon Peter Van de Veire hosted the press presentation of "A matter of time", the song with which Sennek (Laura Groeseneken) will represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon. Managing director of the VRT Paul Lembrechts also attended the press presentation and announced that he will travel to Lisbon on 8 May to hear and see Sennek's performance during the 1st semifinal.

Sennek wrote "A matter of time" together with Alex Callier from Hooverphonic and Maxime Tribeche. "We had the intention to see beauty in things that are perishable," she says in a conversation with VRT NWS. "We know that nothing is eternal and that we have to enjoy the present, we wanted to make an abstract love song that you can carry through to society, but also to a relationship.".

All together Sennek wrote (with various co-writers) 20 possible songs. In addition, she was sent dozens more songs. Yet the choice for "A matter of time" came spontaneously. "The process went well, it was pretty clear that this was a beautiful song, you can compare it with the evolution of a sketch to a painting, which is actually the song I had in mind when I said" yes "to the Eurovision Song Contest." The song itself is recorded in ICP Studio in Ixelles. No one other than Sandra Kim also sang there her winning song "J'aime la vie". Sennek does not object that "A matter of time" at times has something of a song from James Bond. "I like chords that sound happy and sad at the same time. I like to play with melancholy and positivism, and I think this has worked out well."

Sennek does not want to tell much about her act on the stage in Lisbon. "I would really like to tell you about that, but we're still putting it together, everything can still change, and if I change something now, it can be completely different in 2 weeks." It is certain that Véronique Branquinho will design her outfit. "I am a big fan of Belgian fashion, I like the style of Véronique, feminine, with a dark side. I have been a fan of Véronique for a long time and I just asked her. It immediately clicked, and I think it's a great honor to be able to work with her." Sennek almost always wears black, but it is not certain that her outfit for the Eurovision Song Contest will also be black. "We have not decided yet, it's no secret that I like to be in black, but maybe I'll get a black spot on the podium and it will not mix well, so we'll see.".

How far Sennek will get with "A matter of time" in Lisbon, she does not dare to predict. "I think I owe it to the Belgians to have the intention to win, otherwise you will not participate in a competition, I'm just going to do my best, I hope that I can hit people and that I can give them goose bumps. If that works, my chances will be good. A lot depends on the act, so it's hard to predict something. I will not be listening to the competitors because otherwise I'm too nervous. If I have done my best, if I am really satisfied with what I have put down in Lisbon and if other people have seen that I have gone for it, then it has been a success for me.".

Song of Sennek will be presented on 5 March at the special press-conference and on 6 March in the morning radio broadcast - most likely in De Grote Peter van de Veire Ochtendshow from 6 to 9 am at MNM radio.

Portugal continues to accept the artists of the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 for the recording of the postcards and the singer Sennek (Laura Grueseneken), Belgian representative in the contest, came to Lisbon to shoot her postcard.

With the river Tagus as a backdrop, the scenery for this postcard is the docks of Lisbon. These warehouses of the Port of Lisbon were recovered during the 1990s and have become a popular place of the city, offering a fantastic view. Here, the singer was received by a captain and boarded a sailboat, strolling along the river. All this with the city of Lisbon as a backdrop, while we see some of the capital's most iconic symbols, such as the 25 de Abril bridge.

After landing, the singer spoke about this experience: "What a fantastic day! Sailing is so relaxing and thankfully I already had some experience. Navigating the Tagus River was a wish I had and now I have realized it! Despite the cold inside the boat, the sun was shining"

Belgium's Laura Groeseneken to perform as Sennek.

Laura Groeseneken was the first artist announced for the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Belgian broadcaster VRT has announced that she will perform under the name of Sennek in Lisbon. Her entry will be released in the coming weeks.

Laura says: "For a long time I'm creating music under the stage name Sennek, which I chose because it sounds a tad mysterious. And the name also has a personal touch: it comes from my last name Groeseneken. I think it's nice that I will now go to Lisbon under this name. Because I am so closely involved in all choices during this Eurovision participation, it was a logical choice to take this adventure with my own stage name"

What is the first reaction from Laura Groeseneken on her semifinal draw?

"I did not have a preference, but I think it's a nice place, I have a song, an artist name and now also a place in the semifinals, and the puzzle pieces are beginning to connect with each other"

'Mister Eurovision' Peter Van de Veire says: "Being in the first semi-final is good, since if you qualify to the final, you'll have more time to prepare. As for the appearing in the first half - Laura Tesoro had even to open the show and she did it with a bang. The only drawback of the first semifinal is that one country more participates there than in the second semifinal. Anyway it is still exciting, because the EBU has the bad habit of calling Belgium last in the semi-finals."

Last Sunday, Laura Groeseneken was invited during an OGAE Belgium party to celebrate the new year. She met the Belgian fans and also talked to Stéphan Monsieur during an exclusive interview - English translation by EurovisionBelgium. The entry has been chosen and at this moment, Groeseneken is busy with the creative process of the song. During the last three months, she participated in at least twenty writing sessions and the Belgian team also received several songs. They also searched themselves to good potential entries for the Eurovision Song Contest. Plenty of choice, but the Belgian entry for Lisbon will be from herself. She wrote and composed the song. A preferable option for Groeseneken. She has chosen a song that she fallen in love with immediately. "I get goose bumps from it!"

"It will be a pop song, but not a typical one. Not even for the Eurovision Song Contest. It is a bit mysterious."

She is already convinced about her entry because “outsiders can win". Just like the song, the outfit is already chosen and will be something special.

Nine years ago, she already performed in Lisbon at a session in the Belgian consulate. She is a bit clueless about the atmosphere during the Eurovision Song Contest: "I expect a lot of people and that it will be a place where creative things will start, just like on an Expo in Milan". A participation in the Eurovision Song Contest was not planned, but she likes adventure. She decided to say ‘yes' to the VRT:

"This is an unique chance, something you can do once in a lifetime. I am going to do my very best for Belgium, but the expectations are high because of the good results of Loïc Nottet, Laura Tesoro and Blanche. That gives an extra push for me. I will go to the Eurovision Song Contest to win. This is not something silly for me"

Laura still works at IKEA Zaventem as visual merchandiser, even during the writing sessions. "I work at the mornings at IKEA and after a quick break, I work om my songs. It is a hard combination and sometimes, a break is welcome."

29/09: Laura Groeseneken to represent Belgium

Preselection

In early September, Belgian Dutch language broadcaster Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroeporganisatie (VRT) has appointed a special committee in order to pick up the next Belgian Eurovision representative. The spokesperson of VRT, Hans Van Goethem has made the following statement to songfestival.be: "There are conversations with different artists and their teams. There are a lot of artists; famous and unknown. The most important thing is that a good match is found. Everything starts with the artist". The selected performer will be working together with the VRT team to find the most appropriate song and accompanying act.

The announcement of participant took place on 28 September at 23:00 CET in "Van Gils & gasten" show on Één. It was revealed that Sennek (Laura Groeseneken) has been internally selected by the country's national broadcaster who will fly to Lisbon next May in the hope of bringing Belgium their second ever victory in the contest. During the program Laura performed English version of Eurovision 2017 winning entry "Amar pelos dois". Groeseneken together with the broadcaster will put their full focus into finding the right song for the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest, with the forthcoming Belgian representative revealing:

"Very happy that we can now announce this news! What a huge opportunity to go to the Eurovision Song Contest for Belgium. Very exciting. And now, the next step can begin: together with VRT, we will search for the right number and appropriate act. I am already looking forward to our cooperation and to the final result"

(Submotion Orchestra).

Sigrid "Do not Kill My Vibe!"

Песня "A Matter of Time была выпущена 5го марта.

Сеннек написала "A Matter Of Time" вместе с Алексом Каллье из Hooverphonic и Максимом Трибеше.

Но выбор "A Matter Of Time" произошел спонтанно. Сеннек не возражает, когда говорят, что "A Matter of Time" порой напоминает саундтрек к Джеймсу Бонду.

Как далеко Сеннек сможет зайти с "A Matter of Time" в Лиссабоне, она не может предсказать.

Sennek.
