Bio

Yianna Terzi was born on May 7, 1980 in Thessaloniki. Emerging from a musical family of professional singers, including her father Paschalis Terzis who is one of the most known platinum artists in Greece, Yianna Terzis is certainly "the one" to put under the radar.

Yianna is no newbie when it comes to exposure. She has performed in front of thousands of people in many a venue for a number of years now. At a young age, she was inspired by groundbreaking and immensely successful artists such as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Michael Jackson. She obtained a degree in Theory of Music and then pursued her dream of becoming a professional singer, quickly being signed to Universal Music Greece. Audiences connected with Yianna instantly and were moved by the unique tone and timbre of her voice.

At the age of 20, she moved to Athens to begin her musical career, starting with the release of her first album, "Gyrna to kleidi" in 2006 from Cobalt Music. Debut placed her in the eyes of radio with the single "Pou kai pou" which dominated the charts for months. In 2008, Yianna's sophomore album "Ase me na taxidepso" was released with EMI from which two singles and videos were released. She has received nominations for the "Best New Artist" at the "Cyprus Music Awards" as well as the prestigious “Arion Awards”.

Yianna Terzi relocated from Greece to the United States nine years ago, before making her way into the studio to work with Grammy-winning and nominated writers and producers – determined to develop her skills as a songwriter and a vocalist.

She released her first official English single, entitled Love Is Your Name, on iTunes and it soon started to become a staple track in the DJ sets of many underground clubs in New York. This prompted Yianna to begin performing in the city to start establishing herself in the US. She then moved to Los Angeles, where she ended up working as a talent scout for the Vice President of A&R of Epic Records and then Interscope Records, with the aim of broadening her knowledge of the industry, as well as expanding her circle of musical contacts and collaborators (Red One, R City and Dr. Luke to name just a few).

Terzi was chosen as one of the twenty shortlisted artists for the Greek National Eurovision 2018 Final with the song "Oniro Mou", representing Panik Records. On 8 November, she became one of the five acts to be selected to move on to the televised final. Following the disqualification of two of the five acts for not having a "Greek sound", "Oniro Mou" remained in the top three. On 15 February 2018, it was reported that the record labels for the two other competing artists refused to pay a € 20,000 as a financial guaranteed to the Greek broadcaster ERT, leaving "Oniro mou" as the only song remaining in the race, thus being confirmed as the Greek entry.

Yianna is representing Greece in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, where she will be performing the song Oniro Mou (My Dream), which she co-produced with Aris Kalimeris, Dimitris Stamatiou and Michalis Papathanasiou. It was released on 16th February and shot straight to number one on iTunes and the GR Viral 50 on Spotify, as well as topping the YouTube trending chart for several days, clocking up millions of views in the process.

Being away from her country of birth for many years, Yianna felt the need to write a tribute song to Greece to express her gratitude and admiration for her country. The song is an imaginary dialogue between Greece and its people. In the verses, Greece expresses bittersweet feelings which are tinged with nostalgia, while in the chorus, Greeks reassure their country of their undying love. Oniro Mou marks Yianna's first foray into songwriting at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Aris Kalimeris was born and raised in Kozani, a city in northern Greece. He is a law graduate and has more than ten years of experience in the national and international music industry. Apart from working as a musician, he also works as a producer and lyricist. Aris is not new to the Eurovision Song Contest, he worked with the Moldovan delegation in 2009 as a lyricist.

Michalis Papathanasiou is a finance graduate, music producer, composer and arranger. He has worked with some of the most important Greek artists, such as Alkistis Protopsalti, Haris Alexiou, Giorgos Mazonakis, Helena Paparizou, Michalis Hatzigiannis and more, as well as working as a remixer for Stevie Wonder and Snoop Dogg. He has composed and arranged many Greek soundtracks.

Dimitris Stamatiou is a composer and producer who has worked with the greatest names in the Greek and international music industry. He has collaborated with artists such as Snoop Dog, Lexz Pryde, Helena Paparizou, Anna Vissi, ONE, Peggy Zina, Apostolia Zoi, K. Christoforou, Vanessa Adamopoulou, Goin' Through, BO, Midenistis and many more, as well as achieving Platinum and Golden sales with Goin' Through, Ilias Vrettos, Antique and more.

Alexandros Romanos Lysardos and Daphne Skalioni will be commenting on the ERT broadcast of the contest. Alexandros Romanos Lysardos, who is more specialized in cinema, has also participated in many state and private TV shows, worked on radio and in newspapers. Daphne Skalioni has worked for ERT for the past 17 years mainly as a reporter and has been involved in the theatrical performance SexTrafficking. Olina Xenopoulou will be Greek spokesperson at the contest.

Interview

It's a very proud Yianna Terzi who will be flying the flag for Greece this year at Eurovision with the mesmerising Oniro Mou. As she continues her preparations for Lisbon, Yianna took a quick break to discuss her entry and the inspiration behind it with ESCKAZ.

The way Yianna Terzi is feeling in the run-up to Eurovision in May can be easily summed up with two words – proud and excited. Faced with the now very real prospect of representing Greece in Lisbon, she beams. "I feel so proud. Seeing my name and my face next to the flag is a big deal to me. I don't think it's completely sunk in yet – maybe it will when I get to Lisbon."

When it does dawn on her, Yianna's pride will be mirrored by her mother's. "It is the biggest stage I have ever been on. I am sure it will be overwhelming and really exciting! My mom told me "remember when you were in America, knocking on doors to get into the music industry you called me and asked – when will I perform on a huge stage like all superstars do here? – well you have it now." My mom is right! It's here!"

The story behind the song being chosen, shows Yianna's willingness and desire to perform at Eurovision is just as strong as those who have gone before her. "We were writing songs in English for the most part, to offer them to other artists or just for me, as well as songs for Eurovision. But then we heard that this year we would be sending a song in Greek, so we had to sit down and start from scratch. Oniro Mou started taking shape and we instantly realised that this song is special and we should go for it."

And go for it they did. The song was internally selected as the entry for Lisbon and its meaning is also rather patriotic and poignant. "It's an imaginary dialogue between Greece and Greeks, an honest moment between a country and its citizens, very emotional," explains Yianna. The atmospheric, artistically-shot video is closely entwined with the sentiment of the story that the song tells.

"In the video, I play Greece and the actor represents the Greek people. It was shot about one and a half hours from Athens, up on a mountain," she continues. "He [the actor] is wondering around a desolate, abandoned mountain, poor and torn, looking to find his roots again (me), where he came from, to find his strength, to remember who he is. He senses me under his feet and starts digging. I am waiting for him to find me, to bring me back into the light again, so that we can reunite and get on the same path. Its metaphorical of course, it shows how Greece and Greeks don't always act as one, but when times are hard, we protect and support one another."

As for how the visuals in the video and the song will be transformed when performed on the Eurovision stage, Yianna is tight-lipped, giving nothing away. "You'll see!" she laughs playfully. She is, however, keen to share with us what she's looking forward to as part of the Eurovision experience that lies ahead. "[I aim] to enjoy it to the fullest. Meeting people with the same hunger and vision. Singing a song that I wrote with my friends in front of millions – one of the best songs I've ever written," she lists, enthusiastically. As for Lisbon itself; "I love the [Portuguese] language – especially in songs. It's so beautiful. I hope to meet artists from there and maybe work on music later!"

As the topic shifts to working on music in the future and the prospect of a follow-up to her last album, 2008's Ase me na taxidepso, being in the offing shortly, Yianna is candid about this not being on the horizon just yet. "I am not there musically. I won't do any typical Greek folk music stuff. I am writing now, I wanna stick to what I started with Oniro Mou. We'll see how it comes out."

If her Eurovision entry is anything to go by – pretty well! Also, given the fact the singer reveals her main musical influences and favourite artists to be Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson and the 1988-winner-turned-international-superstar Celine Dion, she may be one to watch after Eurovision. "I was obsessed with them when I was little. They have formed me into the artist I am today. And by that I don't mean I sing like them. I mean I am inspired in every aspect by legends. Michael is my number one – I know it's cliché, but it's the truth."

Unfortunately, for Eurovision fans, Yianna won't be part of the ever-growing pre-Eurovision promo-party schedule that now straddles Europe annually – but only so she can focus on how it comes across on the big night. "I don't think I will do the touring promo thing. The song is very special to me and I want to present it in the right way. I was invited to a lot of parties though and I truly thank all of the people who were kind enough to think of me."

Despite her absence from the fan-event calendar, Yianna's last message to esckaz.com's followers and Eurovision fans is one of overwhelming gratitude and appreciation.

"I can't stress enough how important your support is to us. Eurovision is madness lol and we need all the support in the world. I respect Eurovision fans, they are devoted, man! Thank you so much for everything you do every year, you are in my heart forever."

We are sure it'll be worth the wait come May and it may be that Yianna's performance keeps its place in Eurovision fans' hearts as well.

Yianna has revealed more details about the staging in an interview to Kou Kou program on Star TV: "I don't count the days. I go to my rehearsal, I only live in the rehearsal. We will eat, drink & sleep there. I'm anxious a bit only in the evening when I go to sleep. I saw a nightmare that I went to the stage and I forgot the microphone. On the stage, there will be things around me, I will do things, it's what i can say. Also i will wear a dress, not trousers. We will try not to be generic, the stage will be blue. Of course it will "play" the blue. I will not wear red lipstick, I received the message. Most likely my hair will be down and curly".

Yianna Terzi shared on her Instagram account a short part of English version of Onira Mou, which she performed with Stereo Soul members.

Five entries have been shortlisted on 7 November by the artistic committee which included the chairman Anastasios Symeonidis (conductor), Dourdoubakis Petros (songwriter, broadcaster), Ktistakis Dimitris (manager), Kostas Alexis (radio host), Messina Michalis (composer), Pyrarinos Andreas (manager), Spyropoulos Bach Giannis (composer, actor), Tsaras Pantazis (radio producer). The list of five entries which met the required artistic quality, has been revealed first by NewsIt blogger Gregory Melas. However, it was reported that in fact only three of them have fulfilled the required terms of preselection: having Greek lyrics and ethno-Greek influenced music. Two other entries that were preliminarily shortlisted had Greek lyrics, but not completely Greek music. On 14 November the organizing committee decided that since only the three songs met all the conditions, two others (Duo Fina - Idio tempo and Tony Vlahos - Baila jazz) will be eventually excluded from the national final. The three songs are remaining in the race. On 8 December NewsIt has revealed parts of lyrics of the songs.

Next the chosen record labels (Spider Music, Spicy Music and Panik Entertainment Group) should ensure special working group of ERT that they are aiming to do everything they can to promote the song, whether they are ready to assume complete production costs for the stage performance, music video, precontest promotion, travel and stay of the Greek delegation in Lisbon (excluding ERT employees). Those companies which could provide ERT committee the guarantee to meet their required obligations will then participate in the Greek final that is scheduled to take place in February 2018", stated Melas. This procedure is expected to be completed by 5 December.

A date for Greek national final has been set on 1 February being Thursday, February 22 held in ERT studio in Katenaki. Program will be broadcast live on ERT 1 however three entries will be presented through the music videos which were filmed few days ago by ERT crew, however lead vocal performance has to be live. Winner of the selection will be determined by 100% televoting. The final versions of songs have to be submitted to ERT on 9 February and will be released to the public on 12 February. On the meeting of ERT with the three record companies (SPIDER, SPICY, PANIK) it was also decided that each company should deliver the letter of guarantee on the amount of 20,000 euros to cover the costs of Eurovision preparations in case of their victory.

Μην ξεχνάς τον ήλιο (Don't forget the sun)

Don't forget the sun
Don't forget the sun
Don't forget the sun
That shines for us
Don't forget the sun
We have the sae sun
αυτοίτότεπού θα 'ναι;

On 16 February however it was announced that Yianna Terzi will represent Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 with Oneira Mou after other competing record labels failed to submit financial guarantee in amount of 20.000 Euros. The only record label which filed the guarantee was label of Terzi PANIK Records. ERT gave other two labels in the competition - Spider and Spicy - an extension of several hours until today's morning, but no money were received. Spider has requested to extend the deadline for seven working days, but the proposal was turned down by ERT.

A senior executive of ERT told Gregory Melas: "ERT, focusing on the artistic excellence of the TV product and the safeguarding of its interests, submitted specific artistic and economic specifications to the prospective record companies. The process has been transparent and on equal terms for all participants. The satisfaction of all the terms by only a single record company resulted in the cancellation of the Greek Final, which was initially planned by the ERT's management. "

Он сотрудничал с такими артистами, как Snoop Dog, Lexz Pryde, Helena Paparizou, Anna Vissi, ONE, Peggy Zina, Apostolia Zoi, K. Christoforou, Vanessa Adamopoulou, Goin 'Through, BO, Midenistis и многие другие, а также имеет платиновые и золотые диск с Goin 'Through, Ilias Vrettos, Antique и многими другими.

Следующие компании приняли участие в процессе отбора: Minos Emi, Panik Entertainment Group E.P, FeelGood Entertainment Records Music, Heaven Music, Spicy Music, Poly Music, Final Touch, Spider Music, Satellite Records, Kathreftis, Records On Top, EEMusic Production, Vinilio Music, Music Art Lab.
