Bio

33-years old Jonas Flodager Rasmussen, who in the Eurovision context calls himself just Rasmussen was born and raised in Viborg. Today he lives in Langå with his wife and their two children.

Rasmussen studied dramaturgy and music at Aarhus University, and works as a teacher at both the School of Performing Arts at Viborg Cultural School and Aarhus Teater Læring.

He has experience performing in a number of tribute concerts to the artists like Elton John, Abba and Rugsted & Kreutzfeldt. He (as Bon Jones) is also lead singer of Hair Metal Heröes, 80s rock cover band. He had also performed in musicals 'West Side Story', 'Rent' and 'Les Misérables' on stages of Aarhus and Holstebro. For several years he has been part of the East Jutland choir Vocal Line, and has, among other things, performed with The Rolling Stones at Roskilde Festival in 2014.

A participation in the Danish Melodi Grand Prix was not on the cards for Rasmussen, but when he received the offer to sing 'Higher Ground' he nevertheless caught the opportunity. "I was contacted by DR on Facebook, they wanted to hear if I could be the right performer for this song that has a real viking feeling. They were seeking someone who looks like a viking and who can sing. In the end it appeared that I was exactly what they wanted"

'Higher Ground' has been written and composed by the two Swedish songwriters Niclas Arn and Karl Eurén, who both have had several songs in Swedish Melodifestivalen over the years. Their biggest success was 'Kom', which became a big hit for the group Timoteij in Sweden eight years ago. Niclas Arn has also participated in the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix in 2014 where he was one of the songwriters behind Rebekka Thornbech's 'Your Lies', which became number three. Niclas Arn is a part of Rolandz, a humourous Swedish band which was established in 2008 and has released four albums since then, this year they have qualified to the final of Melodifestivalen. Karl Eurén is a songwriter and music producer, and he runs the music production company Cluric Music in Stockholm. His brother is singer Gustav Eurén, and together they run the production company Renegrade Production.

With his long, red beard and hair, Rasmussen's appearance closely mimics our idea of how Vikings looked - so when the two composers of Higher Ground, Niclas Arn and Karl Eurén, saw him perform, they were immediately sure they had found the right performer for the song. Fortunately, Rasmussen instantly connected with the song and its message - a lucky match for the two Swedish composers.

Entries producer at Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2018, Mads Enggaard, says: "Higher Ground is a really powerful song that, in a very modern way, is capable of pulling threads from our Nordic cultural heritage with clear references to Vikings, Armor and Sea Spray. The message is strong and forever applicable; an invitation to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts and is inspired by the legend of viking Magnus Erlendsson. Our viking, Rasmussen, is a God-given singer who can deliver the song with the great surplus that is needed for this epic tale to get winds in the sails"

Viking Magnus Erlendsson and his refusal to fight in the Battle of Anglesey Sound in 1098: Contrary to standard depictions of Viking inclinations, Erlendsson believed in non-violence, and would have none of the fighting, looting and pillaging. He defied his King and code of conduct, and took a stand for something he believed in. These are values reflected in Higher Ground; to listen to and tolerate one another, and to solve conflicts through peaceful means instead of violence.

"To me, it's primarily about creating such a cool entry and then performing it as good as possible and I'm going to do my absolute best on the stage. I have not had Portugal in mind at all. It just gets woooow! But I believe in my song and I believe in the cool work we've done in relation to the stage show, the outfits, the makeup, etc. I think we have a good chance of making a good impression in Portugal", says Rasmussen

Interview

Relaxed, optimistic and very charming - that is how Jonas Rasmussen comes across by giving the interview for our readers. He actually seems to enjoy the whole preparation process for the contest: "I feel so excited, humble and overwhelmed to be a part of the Eurovision history. We're going to London, Tel Aviv and Amsterdam, and I'm looking so much forward to go sing the song and meet the fans. I can't wait!"

His students at Viborg Cultural School support their teacher during this time: "They were so proud and happy, and I received so many messages from them. And when I saw them afterwards, they were so interested in hearing about my experience."

The only downer is being away from his family: "But they know and I know that it's an experience of a lifetime, so that helps us in preparing for departures. But of course, if your 5-year old cries, when you go out the door, it's definitely hard to say goodbye, and most of all you just want to run back and hold her close."

Rasmussen defines his aim at the Eurovision Song Contest very clearly: "First and foremost I want to go to the finals. If we succeed in that, well, anything can happen, and we'll do our best to as high up the scoreboard as possible."

Due to his viking-esque appearance the 33-year-old Dane is the perfect cast for the song "Higher Ground": "I was contacted and asked to audition for the song, and I loved the song the second I heard it, so of course I said yes to audition, and was ultimately chosen to be the artist on the song. It's an epic song, inspired by the story of a peaceful Viking called Magnus Erlandsson, which advocate solving conflicts with words instead of fighting. The two great songwriters from Sweden were inspired by this legend of Magnus Erlandsson and thought it was exciting that he refused to fight the enemies of his king. The song's message is to think twice before doing something rashly in a discussion/argument. Step back and think about what you're doing, listen to what the other person is saying, and reach out your hands towards a peaceful solution, instead of crossing your arms and closing your ears."

However, the stage presentation of the Danish entry in Lisbon appears to have been in the can already: "We have no plans of changing the song itself for the Eurovision song contest. We loved what we did at the national finals, so... ;)"

Having a degree in dramaturgy and music and due to his experience as an musical performer Rasmussen exactly knows about the importance of a good show: "I believe that the more connected the visual experience is to the auditive experience, the more "whole" expression you're going to get. Often a successful visual presentation lifts the song to a new level, so that's of course what I hope people felt/will feel after watching "Higher Ground" at Dansk Melodi Grand Prix and Eurovision Song Contest."

Unfortunately, there are no plans yet to film an official music video for his entry song, but the Eurovision postcard has already been filmed. "We filmed in the Palacio Nacional de Mafra, a beautiful place north of Lisbon. We got to walk around just the crew and me and the historic feel of the place was so breathtaking."

Concerning a possible release of any different versions of "Higher Ground" or his follow-up carrier Rasmussen prefers to keep a low profile: "We've talked about something, but not anything I can talk about right now :) "

We hope he will be able to reveal more details during all his promotional appearances before going to Lisbon: "I can't wait to meet you guys, so I genuinely hope that a lot of you are going to the different pre-parties and of course to Lisbon. Please come say hi if you see me", says Rasmussen and invites to follow his journey at Facebook and Instagram.

Latest news

In a week and a half, the Danish Grand Prix winner Rasmussen travels to Portugal's capital city of Lisbon, where he will represent Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest. Already on Tuesday, May 1, the Danish Viking will have his first rehearsal at the big Eurovision stage. Today, DR has revealed who will back Rasmussen - and there are five vikings with big voices, all of whom are used to appear on stages around Denmark:

Daniel Firth - has for years performed and released music under his artist name Dan Firth and is now preparing his debut EP.
Gustav Emil Bresler - Singer of the band Walk My Elephant, who has performed several places throughout the country, and who in 2015 released EP 'Toybox'.
Jesper Paasch - An educated actor and has, among other things, been involved in the TV 2 series 'Rita' and 'Bedre skilt end aldrig' and 'Historien om Danmark at DR, where he played the role of Harald Blåtand. Most recently he has participated in the major musical performances 'Annie Get Your Gun' and 'Chess' at The New Theater and at Tivoli in Copenhagen, respectively.
Mads Engelhardt - has in recent years played in a cover band that has featured songs of everything from Johnny Cash to Beyoncé.
Anders Ørsager - one of the country's most used singing coaches teaching at the Rhythmic Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen. Former member of the a capella group Basix, who became second in the Danish Melodi Grand Prix 2001.

The first four will be visible on stage with Rasmussen, while Anders Ørsager will be off the stage for the sake of choreography.

"There are really some cute boys, and at the same time they are really talented singers. So it's a skid team we've gathered", he says, adding: "And then I'm so fortunate that I'm a singer - otherwise nobody would think I was interesting in the bunch of delicious men", says Rasmussen.

Rasmussen has filmed his Eurovision postcard at the Palace / Convent of Mafra. Composed of a monumental palace and monastery in the Baroque style, the Convent / National Palace of Mafra in the district of Lisbon is highlighted by the Library of the Palace of Mafra, considered the "greatest treasure" of the building. With a collection of more than 36,000 books with gold-bound leather bookbinders, the Palace estate includes a second edition of Luis Vaz de Camões's The Lusiads . "I love this wonderful place, I'm sure many of the visitors thought Tormund got there," the singer wrote on social networks, highlighting their similarities to the character starring of Kristofer Hivju in the series Game of Thrones. The typical postcard door, which was present in all previous recordings, was placed outside the monument built by King D. João V in 1717 as a form of divine thanks to the request to obtain the progeny of Queen D. Maria Ana from Austria.

""It was a fantastic experience to record the postcard here at the National Palace of Mafra, a beautiful monument that breathes history in all its corners. The team was fantastic and I'm really looking forward to seeing the final result!"

30/01: Conchita to perform as special guest
22/01: 10 finalists of DMGP revealed
21/01: DMGP voting system to remain unchanged

The entertainment manager of the Danish national broadcaster DR, Jan Lagermand Lundme accepted a proposal from the Executive Supervisor for the Eurovision Song Contest Jon Ola Sand to get involved with the Reference Group of the contest. Jan Lagermand Lundme was one of the leading figures behind the show when Denmark hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014. Having made a career over 30 years, the experienced man is ready to offer his willingness and knowledge to contribute to the development of the competition.

"I almost fell down from the chair of excitement, when I've received a call from Jon Ola Sand. And of course I thanked and accepted right away. You do not have to think about such an offer"

The Reference Group is composed of the following members:
a) Chairman (appointed by the Eurovision Television Committee) - Dr. Frank-Deiter Freiling (ZDF);
b) three elected members from among the Heads of Delegation - Aleksander Radić (RTVSlo), Emilie Sickinghe (AVROTROS), Nicola Caligiori (RAI);
c) two executive producers from previous host countries - Martin Österdahl (2016), vacant (2017);
d) the executive producer of the present Host Broadcaster - João Nuno Nogueira;
e) the ESC Executive Supervisor - Jon-Ola Sand;
f) If deemed necessary by the Chairman of the Reference Group and the EBU Permanent Services, two additional members shall be jointly chosen at the discretion of the Chairman and the ESC Executive Supervisor from amongst EBU Members on the basis of their business and/or production experience in the entertainment area - Jan Lagermand Lundme (DR), Edoardo Grassi (France TV).

DR entertainment manager together with the eight-man-wide reference group will ensure the development of Euroision in the coming years. "When you like big shows and gathering people, it's a very unique opportunity to be allowed to embody something as big as Eurovision. I am very excited about it", says Jan Lagermand Lundme.

Lundme highlighted several issues he would like to work on with the Reference Group: focusing on the new media, keeping politics out of the contest and bringing more emotions in the TV show. "We were good at involving the new media when we hosted in 2014. There are no others who have done it in such a big extent, and I really would like to work on that," he says.

"What matters to me as a member of the reference group is to keep Eurovision as free from politics as possible. What Eurovision can and must do, is to provide a common experience for Europeans. It was precisely the community that was the starting point when Eurovision was set up after World War II, and it will still be. Then all possible realities can be found in the way, and they must be handled in the best way", says the entertainment director

In his time as entertainment director in DR, Jan Lagermand Lundme has helped to introduce the Danish TV viewers to X Factor, which in the new year returns with its 11th season. And although Jan Lagermand Lundme does not compare X Factor and Eurovision, there is still one important ingredient from X Factor, which he hopes to be able to fill more in Eurovision. "Emotions and feelings of the participants are incredibly important. I will take this to the group, as I will also try to make sure that the shows become diverse and be driving impressions from the country where they are hosted, "he says.

04/07: Submission period launched

Preselection

On 4 July Danish broadcaster DR has announced some changes in the "Dansk Melodi Grand Prix" for the next year's Eurovision. As of this day, DR started accepting professionally made demos for the participation in the Grand Prix 2018. New person in charge of the music material selection is Mads Enggaard, who will supervise the whole process.

For 10 years Mads Enggaard has been working in the television industry, primarily music programs like Toppen af Poppen and X Factor. For the last four years he has been involved in the Eurovision Song Contest as so-called 'viewing room producer'. "We must think the whole process through and look at the whole package from the start", says Mads Enggaard. - "I hope we can get some entries that are inspiring and create pictures and arouse emotions when you hear them. In terms of genre, it can be anything between heaven and earth, just the quality should be so high that it becomes difficult for the jury to choose between them".

"We try to do things in a different way. We've been super happy with the work of Jonas Schrøder and Cutfather who have done a tremendous job, but now it is time to try something new", says Jan Lagermand Lundme

Submission period will remain open throughout the year. If entry was sent in before 15 September, then it was considered for the Eurovision 2018, but it still can be used even if it is submitted later - or otherwise will go into a pool for Eurovision 2019. As a change, however, only professionally recorded demos are allowed. As usual, either the composer, song writer or the performing artist must be Danish citizen or must have strong relations to Denmark. Complete rulebook is available here.

According to DR entertainment manager Jan Lagermand Lundme the first step on the mission on bringing Eurovision back to Denmark has been already made in 2016 with the first Danish participation in the final of the contest for the three years. However, the placement needs to be improved in 2018, he says.

On 25 October, DR was hosting an event where a number of specially invited Eurovision fans, music experts and ordinary music lovers were able to express their opinion about almost 30 of the songs that have been shortlisted this year. "Last year, we decided to do everything we could to open up the process, and we'll do that again this year. By being listened by a wide array of fans, people from the music industry and ordinary Danes, we hear the opinions of many people and ensure that we select the correct top 10 songs".

Johannes Nymark and Annette Heick together with Aalborg mayor Thomas Kastrup-Larsen, during the launch of next year's host city. (Photo: Betina Fleron Hede © dr) Revealed at a press conference on 16 August, the Danish city of Aalborg was announced as the host city for next year's Dansk Melodi Grand Prix (DMGP) event where it will be held on 10 February at the Gigantium, holding up to a capacity of 8,500. This is the seventh time that Aalborg has been chosen to host the Danish national final, the last of which being as recently as 2015 which was held at the same venue as the planned 2018 final. Tickets for the show went on sale on 26 October at DR Billet for 465, 415, 315 and 215 (limited view) DKK.

Annette Heick and Johannes Nymark will once again be the hosts of Danish Melodi Grand Prix 2018. "I'm so glad Annette and Johannes have said yes to be our hosts again. They have a common passion and love for the Grand Prix, and their chemistry is completely unsurpassed. They were amazing last time, and it's a great pleasure to see them together on stage again in Gigantium in Aalborg", says DR's Entertainment Manager, Jan Lagermand Lundme.

In 2016, Annette Heick hosted national final along with Jacob Riising and her mother, Hilda Heick. "I'm simply so proud that I'm almost bursting. I can not thank you enough to be allowed to host the Danish Melodi Grand Prix again. The Grand Prix is in my DNA, so being part of the show again means something special to me".

"It's a nice feeling to be allowed to do something again which, I think, was so amazingly fun. Next year, the challenge will be to do something else and something that hopefully is even bigger than what we did this year. And I am looking forward to that", says Johannes Nymark

DR is dropping it's tradition of the postcards in the Melodi Grand Prix: Viewers will get a whole new experience. Short presentation videos of the participants that have been aired just before they go on stage are now in the past, as DR has chosen to take the program into a new direction this year.

"Every year we have a desire to make the show even better. This year, a big change will happen, for the first time ever, we will drop the postcards in favour of talking live with the participants right after they have performed on the stage. We will make sure that viewers can come even closer to the participants for a moment, feel what they feel and hear what they think of their performance," explains DR entertainment manager Jan Lagermand Lundme

While the presentation of the ten participants has changed, the voting procedure will be the same as last year. The ten artists go on stage and sing their songs. After that, the TV viewers, who have 50 percent of the votes will start voting alongside and a jury consisting of five Eurovision fans that has the remaining 50 percent of the votes. The votes of the viewers and the jury will be combined, and the three songs that have won the most votes will go to the superfinal round. Here the viewers and jury vote again, and the vote remains 50-50.

"We were really pleased that we introduced a jury of Eurovision fans last year, so we were able to get their perspective on the songs. The selected fans have experience of so many Eurovision shows and know what works and what does not work and therefore their opinion is important for choosing a song that can achieve a good result for Denmark", says Jan Lagermand Lundme.

"It is important that we get good result at the Eurovision to maintain the interest towards the Melodi Grand Prix among the Danish population. If we send songs that do not reach a good result, interest is falling at home. And it's too bad since the Melodi Grand Prix really is a show that is capable of gathering the population".

At last year's Eurovision, Anja managed to secure Denmark's first final spot for three years, which was DR's goal. This year, the ambitions are even higher; Denmark should be back in the top 10 of the contest. And it is absolutely possible with the ten songs that have been selected for the Danish Grand Prix this year, says entertainment manager Jan Lagermand Lundme. "I'm very happy for the ten songs and I know there's a great chance that whatever song is winning, it can be in the top 10", he says.

DR will reveal the 10 participants in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2018 during a press conference on January 22. The press conference will take place in DR's Concert Hall Studio 4 and will run from 11:00-13:00 CET. Finalists will be announced by the former DMGP winners, participants and celebrities, including Keld Heick (songwriter for over 30 DMGP entries), Hilda Heick (Danish juror in 2016), Jørgen de Mylius (host of 11 DMGP's) , Kirsten Sigaard (Denmark 1984, 1985, 1988), Søren Bundgaard (Denmark 1984, 1985, 1988) and Gry Johansen (Denmark 1983). Full entries will be published on 5 February.

The immediately most eye-catching participant in this year's field is the singer Sannie, better known by her artist name Whigfield. Up through the nineties, she was known in many parts of the world with hits like 'Saturday Night', 'Another Day' and 'Think of You'.

Two participants who have already performed on the stage of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix before are Ditte Marie and Albin Fredy. Ditte Marie took part as member of Le Freak in 2011 and again on her own in the following year, while Albin Fredy was competing in 2013.

Several of the participants in the year have been discovered through social media. This applies, for example, to Rikke Ganer-Tolsøe , who will sing this year's only Danish-language song, "Holder fast i ingenting". She was discovered via the hashtag 'singer' at Instagram. Lasse Meling was discovered on YouTube at the age of 13 and already has several releases behind him. He debuts this year with 'Unfound'. YouTube is also the place where Sandra was discovered. She will be performing 'Angels to My Battlefield'.

Both Lasse Meling and Sandra have contributed themselves to writing their Grand Prix entries, the same as the debuting singer KARUI , who is going to sing 'Signals'. KARUI has for years sung gospel both as a soloist and in bands. Another act who also fully controls gospel singing are the three Faroese sisters Vanja, Laila and Barbara, who together form the trio CARLSEN. They will sing the song 'Standing Up for Love', which includes two Swedish songwriters as composers. Swedish songwriters are also behind 'Higher Ground', to be performed by the Grand Prix debutant Rasmussen .

This year's youngest participant is the 17-year-old Anna Ritsmar, who in 2016 reached the boot camp in X Factor. She returns to the spotlight with the song 'Starlight'.

Among the songwriters of this year's songs in the Danish Melodi Grand Prix, there are several names worth mentioning in particular: Lise Cabble and Rune Braager are Melodi Grand Prix veterans and both have 2 songs this year. With this year's two songs, Lise Cabble has written a total of 15 Grand Prix songs and has even won three times - no later than 2013, when she wrote 'Only Teardrops' to Emmelie de Forest. For Rune Braager it is his ninth and tenth contribution to the Danish Melody Grand Prix. One of his two songs, Rune Braager has written with, amongst others, with the singer Clara Sofie Fabricius, who in recent years had hits like 'When Time Backwards' and 'Burn Me Anything'. The triple winner Lars 'Chief 1' Pedersen is also back in the Melodi Grand Prix, as well as Jeanette Bonde, who himself participated as a soloist last year.

Entertainment Manager at DR, Jan Lagermand Lundme, is proud of the ten selected songs and is looking forward to presenting them to the Danes. "I promise that it will be a fantastic show this year. We have an incredibly strong team of songwriters and the right mix of experience and young talent among the ten participants of the year. There is something to suit all tastes, so I'm really looking forward to Annette Heick and Johannes Nymark again hosting a huge Grand Prix party for all of Denmark", says Jan Lagermand Lundme

Conchita returns to Denmark to be guest of the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix in Gigantium in Aalborg on Saturday, February 10.

"It is a great pleasure to welcome Conchita back to Denmark. She is an icon in the Grand Prix story and in many ways a symbol of all that the Melodi Grand Prix and Eurovision represent. Namely, a message about community, music and diversity in Europe, says Jan Lagermand Lundme.

Teater Læring.

Renegade Production.

Недавно он принимал участие в мюзиклах 'Annie Get Your Gun' и 'Chess' в Новом Театре и в Тиволи в Копенгагене.
Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2001.

a) Председатель (назначаемый Телевизионным комитетом Евровидения) - доктор Франк-Дитер Фрайлинг (ZDF);
b) три избираемых члена из числа глав делегаций - Александар Радич (RTVSlo), Эмили Сикинге (AVROTROS), Никола Калиджиори (RAI);
c) два исполнительных продюсера прошлых конкурсов - Мартин Ёстердаль (2016), вакантно (2017);
d) исполнительный продюсер нынешнего телеканала-организатора - Жоао Нуно Ногейра;
e) Исполнительный супервайзер ЕВС - Йон Ола Санд;

В девяностые годы ее имя было известным во многих частях мира благодаря таким хитам, как 'Saturday Night', 'Another Day' и 'Think of You'.

Также на YouTube была обнаружена и Sandra, которая выступит с 'Angels to My Battlefield'.

Одну из них он написал с певицей Clara Sofie Fabricius, на счету которой хиты прошлых лет 'When Time Backwards' и 'Burn Me Anything'.
