Bio

21-years old Michael Rice comes from Hartlepool. Michael has loved music from a young age and even taught himself to play piano from watching videos online after his mum bought him a keyboard when he was younger. When he was six he attended Billingham Forum Theatre School of Performing Arts and was in a few musicals at school. He had to take a break from it after being bullied, but got back into it at the age of 14. Now he is an enthusiastic advocate for anti-bullying, he recorded a single in support of the movement. He has visited many schools throughout the UK to speak on the subject, especially because he was bullied himself for singing.

Michael first came to TV audiences' attention four years ago, when he was just 16 and entered The X Factor 2014 reaching the boot camp stage. At that time he was spending his days busking, and said passers-by can be some of his biggest supporters. A video of Michael singing on the streets of York went viral in 2015, as he belted out Years & Years track King. It was seen by almost a quarter of a million people.

"My list of musical icons is never-ending. Adele, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera and Stevie Wonder are all on there. I'm aiming for quite a pop-y sound in my own music but I want to keep the storytelling element of soul music in there"

He then competed in and won won the first series of the BBC One entertainment show All Together Now in 2018. Auditioning with "Proud Mary" by Tina Turner he got a perfect score of 100 and qualified directly to the finals, where he performed "Crazy in Love" by Beyoncé ft. Jay-Z and "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen. Michael's performance in the final prompted 94 out of the 100 judges to take to their feet, including Spice Girl Geri Halliwell.

He had to quit his job at Hartlepool's Burn Road McDonald's when he couldn't get time off to film the BBC show. Scooping £50,000 as a prize he tok his family to Disneyland and has launched an own venture - waffle and milkshake business The Waffle and Crepe Shack in Oxford Road. He is being helped by mum Stephanie Langley, 38, and other family members as they create desserts for customers to take away, with a seating area also set up for people to take a break in store.

Michael has supported artists such as Ed Sheeran, Nicole Scherzinger, Jess Glynne, Labrinth, Charlie XCX, Sigma, Becky Hill and other performing at various events and arenas such as O2 Arena, Wembley Arena, Newcastle Metro Radio Arena. His first ever travel to Europe was in January 2019, when he went with his friends to Tenerife. Rice describes it as the best time, but he broke his toe felling in the pool. He says he still occasionally is doing busking, popping down to York or to Newcastle on weekends, and one can earn £250-300 for half a day or a day. Michael is currently working on his debut EP with producers Pete Boxsta Martin and Dantae Johnson who have written and produced tracks for Jessie J, Missy Elliott and James Arthur.

Michael has always watched Eurovision when growing up and believes it's a brilliant platform for countries to showcase their music. His favourite winners are Salvador Sobral (Eurovision winner 2017 - Portugal) and Måns Zelmerlöw (Eurovision winner 2015 - Sweden).

Singer got perfect reviews from You Decide panel during the final show. Mollie King said: "That was an incredible performance… your range is amazing and you should be so proud of yourself." Rylan added: "You were so believable, and I thought you were fantastic." And Marvin Humes concluded: You are a proper, proper singer, up there with the Sam Smiths, James Arthurs and Shawn Mendeses of this world. That for me was a Eurovision winning performance.".

"My version of Bigger Than Us is such an epic, big song with a big key change and harmonies, and I think the lyrics resonate with everyone. Bigger Than Us is about love, coming together, it's a really powerful song. You just connect with it. It's all about emotion. I grew up with my mam, and my dad had drug problems and stuff like that, and later on I got to know him. He used to know I was singing and he was dead proud of me. When I'm singing them words at the beginning - "Hear these words that I sing to you" - it just reminds me of him. "

"I did not think it was going to be me. I just thought it would be great experience. I did not think anyone could win two TV shows within a year. I just stood there in shock, then the other contestants ran to me and they hugged me - it was really, really nice. It is crazy. I did not expect it to go my way. Everything was go good - the staging, the dancers... It is going to be a total whirlwind, travelling to different countries, performing the song for everyone. It is going to be really good experience.".

Interview

The Eurovision season started in the UK today with the reveal of the acts and songs taking part in this year's national final BBC Eurovision: You Decide on 8th February in Salford.

ESCKAZ.com were fortunate to be invited to a meet and greet session with all this years acts at the BBC Television Centre in London. We had a chance to chat quickly with all the hopefuls, including the eventual winner Michael Rice.

Latest news

Backing vocals team for the British representative Michael Rice has been confirmed: Anna Sahlene (Estonia 2002), Melanie Wehbe (songwriter of Danish entry 2019 "Love Is Forever"), Linda Pritchard (Melodifestivalen 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011), Desta Zion Wilson (songwriter and vocalist from Bermuda) and Chin Simon (singer/songwriter/choir director).

Michael Rice, the UK representative for The Eurovision Song Contest 2019 has performed his song ‘Bigger Than Us’ on Zvijezde pjevaju on HRT1 in Croatia last Saturday night.

Zvijezde pjevaju is an entertainment show that was also known as Just The Two of Us in the UK, hosted by Tess Daly and Vernon Kay on BBC One in 2006.

This was the first time Michael has performed ‘Bigger Than Us’ since winning Eurovision: You Decide the public selection show in February.

Michael said "I'm so excited to be performing on Croatian TV, with my first performance of ‘Bigger Than Us’ since Eurovision: You Decide. I’ve been working so hard in rehearsals to make sure I give it my all on stage, for all of my amazing Croatian fans. I’m really looking forward to be meeting Roko for the first time I think he is an amazing artist and performer and his song is fantastic!"

Andrew Cartmell, executive producer and Head of Delegation for the UK says: "We're really excited that in the run up to Tel Aviv, Michael Rice will be travelling around Europe to promote Bigger Than Us. Michael will be attending even more Eurovision Pre-Parties this year promoting the song in London, Amsterdam, Madrid and Moscow, and his appearance on HRT1 in Croatia this weekend will be followed by other TV and radio appearances in UK and in continental Europe. We’re really proud of the song and the whole team is super excited to get the song heard by as many people as possible before Michael takes to the stage in Israel"

Check interview of Michael Rice to the Israeli host broadcaster KAN 11.

Rice says that British public is usually very critical to their own entries, but "I feel now that UK people have actually seen the song that is going to the Eurovision, they got behind and support me". "It's crazy, because in UK we've got Adele, The Beatles, Sam Smith, and because we didn't won for so long thus they want it even more, so it's just to prove a point - people we still can do it, we have a good song, so fingers crossed".

Asked about boycott protests, Rice responded: "Eurovision is purely music, and it's not about politics and everything what's going on, I'm really one to stand, I'm just a singer, representing, to do my country proud".

Representative of UK Michael Rice had his official photoshoot.

Representative of Estonia at the Eurovision 2002 Sahlene, who tried to enter Eesti Laul this year, but was not chosen in the list of participants, will still be travelling to Tel Aviv. Swedish singer will sing backing vocals in the entry of British Michael Rice.

So- this is happening!! So excited and honored to to backup vocals with the amazing Michael Rice for UK in Eurovision in Tel Aviv. EXACTLY 20 years after I did backup vocals, also in Israel (!!) with Charlotte Perrelli for Sweden (who won that year). My Eurovision track record is pretty good. Place 1, 2 and 3 for three different countries! First place for Sweden 1999, background vocals Charlotte Perrelli. Second place for Australia 2016, background vocals for Dami Im. Third place 2002 for Estonia as a solo artist with RUNAWAY"

She is very pleased with the victory of her compatriot Victor Crone.

"What I can recommend to Victor - to be modest about the fact that you represent another, not your own country, and really try to make Estonia proud," said Sahlene.

"I wish the whole Estonian team a good luck! And I still hope that on one good day I will still be able to participate in the Eesti Laul, if you still have room for me," the singer added.

Preselection

On 19 September BBC has confirmed the United Kingdom's participation in the 64th Eurovision Song Contest held in Tel Aviv, Israel next May; as well as opened the public song submissions to find the UK's entry. To register your interest in representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, one should email the title of the song and the name of the composer(s) to BBCEurovisionSubmissions@bbc.co.uk . Within 72 hours of sending the email he will receive instructions on how to upload an entry to the BBC Eurovision portal. This should be MP3 only. The song must adhere to the EBU competition rules. Composers and song writers may only submit one entry. The BBC reserves the right to use a performer of its choice for any song submitted for consideration. The closing date for submissions is Friday October 26th, 2018.

As last year, all public entries will be carefully considered and shortlisted by a representative panel of UK Eurovision Fan Club (OGAE UK) members. At the same time, entries are also being sought from leading professional songwriters, with guidance from songwriter, publisher and new Music Consultant for the BBC, Greig Watts of DWB Music. Last two years, Watts was member of Polish Eurovision delegation, and has co-written in past entries for British, Belgian, Czech, Lithuanian and other preselections and also organized several Eurovison songwriting camps. You can read more about DWB Eurovision involvement here.

Greig Watts says: "The Eurovision Song Contest just gets bigger and better and more exciting for me each year, and I'm sure Israel will deliver another amazing contest. I'm so happy to be involved this year for the UK; it really is a dream come true, and I'm looking forward to working with the team to get the strongest possible song and result we can for the UK, like we do on the world music stage. There's no guaranteed song-writing formula for Eurovision as each year something different wins. I'm looking for melodic songs with impact for the arena as well as on TV. Songs that instantly hit you and never leave your brain!"

A final shortlist of songs, from either route of entry, will again be showcased to the UK public, who will have the chance to vote for their favourite in Eurovision: You Decide on BBC Two, details of which will be announced later this year. Show will again be hosted by Mel Giedroyc.

Kate Phillips, Controller Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC said: "I'm delighted that You Decide will be returning to BBC Two as the UK's song search for Eurovision 2019 begins. We want to ensure that we cast the net far and wide to find the best entry possible, so we are really keen to hear from anyone who feels they have a song that has what it takes to do our country proud and bring Eurovision home!"

Presented by Mel Giedroyc and Måns Zelmerlöw, BBC Music's Eurovision: You Decide will be broadcast live from MediaCity UK in Salford on Friday 8th February 2019 as the show comes to the North West of England for the very first time. 90-minute program will be broadcast on BBC Two, as part of BBC Music's programming on the channel.

Presentation of the entries taking part in British preselection Eurovision: You Decide will take place on Wednesday 23 January at 10:00 am local time (11:00 CET). Press-presentation of the artists will take place on the evening of the same day.

Tickets for the event will be allocated via a ballot at Lostintv.com. Age restriction is 16 and over. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. Doors open 4.45pm. The show will be broadcast on BBC Two and on BBC iPlayer from 7.30pm to 9pm.

This year Eurovision: You Decide will feature a brand new format where three songs will be performed by six different acts. Via public song submission and Eurovision song writing camps held by Music Consultant Greig Watts, 10 songs were shortlisted and were given to an international jury of music experts who chose the final 3 songs to put forward to the show.

Each of the three songs will be performed in two musically different ways, by two different acts. The first part of the show will see three rounds of the "Song-Off". After all six acts have performed the expert judges will decide which three acts and version of each song will go forward to face the public vote. The three final acts will then perform one more time before the voting lines are opened as the public chooses which song and performer will represent the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. Votes can be cast by calling the number that will appear on screen during the show or via bbc.co.uk/eurovision. Viewers voting online must ensure they are signed in with their BBC account.

Kate Phillips, Controller of Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC said: "Forget about a sing-off, next year it's all about the song-off as we once again try to marry a great singer with a great song, one which could finally get us on the left hand side of the leader board. We may be leaving the EU but we are still determined to win Eurovision again one day!"

"I always like ballads so I took the tempo down, added loads of harmonies, loads of layers and lots of backing vocals - I wanted to get the emotion across. Sweet Lies is about being in a situation in life and taking the good with the bad, about being vulnerable and diving in head first. Eurovision is such a big platform and there's nothing else like it. The best music is coming from the UK. It's the Olympics of music and song."

You know something is drastically wrong with your relationship but you choose to ignore those signs because you love that person.

BBC One "All Together Now" (аналог российского шоу "Все Вместе".

The Waffle and Crepe Shack

Это первый раз, когда Майкл исполнил "Bigger Than Us" с момента победы на Eurovision: You Decide в феврале.

Майкл говорит: "Я очень рад выступить на хорватском телевидении с моим первым исполнением "Bigger Than Us" после Eurovision:You Decide.

All Together Now, Let it Shine.
