Bio

Sarah McTernan (born 11 March 1994) is an Irish singer songwriter from Scariff, County Clare. Sarah is an only child and has a 2.5 year old daughter Mia who also loves to sing.

Sarah attended Mountshannon National school before enrolling in Scarriff Community College in 2006. After sitting her Leaving Cert in 2011, she then went on to study a pre nursing course in Ennis Community College. She then went on to study Music Technology at Limerick Institute of Technology after which she took a break from education and worked as a retail employee in Penneys (Primark). Sarah has also worked as a makeup artist in Limerick. She always said 'My career will either be to help people or music'. In September 2014, she got accepted in to the University of Limerick to study a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Voice and Dance but unfortunately due to financial difficulties, Sarah had to defer her course.

In November 2014, after getting through the blind auditions on The Voice of Ireland, without ever doing any gigs, Sarah set up her own band called 'The Jeds'. The band performs at weddings and gig around Clare and Munster. Sarah plays traditional violin, guitar, ukulele, piano and tin whistle.

She came third in the series four of The Voice of Ireland in April 2015. Sarah, who has not been singing publicly for long has "wowed" the judges in her blind audition performing "Who You Are" by Jessie J, managing to get all four judges to graciously turn their chairs and fight for her. Her coach and mentor eventually came to be Rachel Stevens of S Club 7 fame. Sarah's audition video remains the highest viewed video of the series with 90,100 plus hits. In the show she has performed "Changing" by Sigma feat. Paloma Faith, "Ghost" by Ella Henderson, "What I Did For Love" by David Guetta feat, Emeli Sande, "Earned It" by The Weeknd and "If I Were A Boy" by Beyoncé.

Last year, Sarah competed to represent San Marino at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon with a song called Eye of the Storm written by Swedish song writers and identical twin sisters Ylva and Linda Perssons. She also was submitting entries for the internal Irish preselection since her The Voice participation.

Sarah McTernan will represent Ireland in this year's competition with a catchy song called 22. The track was written by Janieck, Marcia Sondeijker and Roulsen. She and Persson sisters have submitted one of the 430 entries to represent Ireland in this year's competition. The producers liked her voice, but not her song, and they liked the song 22 but not the singer. When they discovered McTernan was Irish, they decided to pair her with the song. "After I got the call, I was dancing around the place. I was so excited. As a singer, of course you want to represent your country," McTernan said.

In August of 2018, RTÉ held its second annual Eurovision Song Contest Forum and invited key industry professionals, songwriters and performers to come to RTÉ to gain a deeper insight into the present day Contest from international Eurovision experts and key RTÉ decision makers. Over 430 songs were submitted to RTÉ for consideration before the November deadline. Several panels comprising music experts, journalists, Eurovision fans and students from BIMM shortlisted the entries received and ultimately the song 22 was selected as Ireland's entry.

RTÉ's Eurovision producer Michael Kealy said there was "no question she has got star quality" and a "very distinctive voice". "We received a huge amount of entries for this year thanks in part to Ryan O'Shaughnessy's great performance in Lisbon last year. When you listen to 430 voices, trust me, you know a memorable voice. We asked her to audition to sing the song. We were blown away a bit. Sarah has an amazing voice which stood out the minute I heard it and she fits perfectly with our chosen song '22'. I think the Eurovision audience will love her, now it's full steam ahead preparing for her performance in Tel Aviv in May," he said. "Outside the wedding circuit in Ennis and Clare where she lives, most people wouldn't be familiar with her. We brought her in for camera tests. She is a very confident performer.".

McTernan told RTÉ that a psychic had predicted years ago that she would appear on a big television show, have a daughter and a spike in her career when she was 24. All three have now come to pass. The 24-year-old singer said being selected to represent Ireland in the much-loved competition is "like an early birthday present". "My 25th birthday is next Monday and if you'd told me last year that I'd be chosen to represent my country at Eurovision, performing the song for the first time on Dancing with the Stars this Sunday, and then flying to Tel Aviv on my birthday to record a postcard, I would have told you - you were crazy!".

Sarah said her family, including her little girl, Mia, are "super excited" for the journey she is embarking on. "My Mom, Nana, family and friends are super excited for me - they're shocked and very proud. I can't wait to teach my biggest fan - my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Mia - all the lyrics to 22!".

Speaking about hearing the song for the first time, she said: "When I heard it at first, I just thought it was so catchy. It's a proper earworm. I thought it was really poppy and really current. It's a really strong song for Eurovision.".

Filmed on Dollymount Strand, the video for 22 was directed by Christian Tierney who has worked with artists including Hozier, Niall Horan, The Weeknd, Macklemore, Demi Lovato, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, The 1975 and James Bay. Christian also directed the acclaimed music video for Ryan O'Shaughnessy's 2018 Eurovision Song Contest entry Together which went on to reach the Grand Final. Despite the cold temperatures on the day of the shoot, Sarah said it was still "great craic" and joked that she hopes no one notices her busting out her "dad moves". "I was just frozen. I wasn't really able to move so I was doing a bit of dad-dancing, so hopefully it's not too obvious," she laughed.

Janieck Devy is Dutch singer-songwriter and guitar soloist, born in Nordwijk in 1994. He was first known for his worldwide hit "Reality" alongside Lost Frequencies which topped the European sales and airplay charts in 2015 (197 million views on YouTube). Following this success, Janieck got signed to Spinnin' Records in 2016, where he released his successful solo singles such as "Feel The Love" and "Does it Matter". In 2017, the song "Little Hollywood", a collaboration between Janieck and the German DJ Alle Farben, became the Number 1 airplay song in Germany (22 million views on YouTube) and was nominated for the 1Live Award for best single of 2017.

Marcia "Misha" Sondeijker is a songwriter/vocalist hailing from Amsterdam. She kicked off her songwriting career by participating with a songwriting contest "The Hit" on Dutch television where she came second in DJ Chuckie's team with her song "Go Ahead". With songwriting credits for the BBC's Eurovision You Decide in 2018, three of her songs made it to the top 10. Her recent DJ collaborations include "Home" with Madison Mars (Billboard top #30 USA).

Roulsen (Roel Rats) from Utrecht has been surrounded by music from an early age. He cut his teeth learning to play the piano that, a few years later, evolved into working as part of the DJ duo RoulnDoors. The duo was supported by world's biggest acts and played gigs all over the world including Sensation, Ministry of Sound London and Avicii's tour. After eight fruitful years of DJing, Roulsen started writing and producing music for artist and acts worldwide.

On the Eurovision stage Sarah will be joined by backing singers Ciara O'Connor and Fiona Harte.

Latest news

Speaking to Liffey Sound FM, Ireland's Head of Delegation Michael Kealy has revealed that the demo version of "22" has featured male vocals, so that selection panel and Michael himself thought that the song would be best suited for a male singer. However, once RTÉ heard Sarah’s version of the song, they reconsidered their options and went on to select her for the contest.

"We had a strong semi-final last year and everyone said we wouldn't qualify, everyone said we would struggle to qualify…and we qualified comfortably. I am not writing our chances off by any means and I think she has a very, very strong chance to qualify. A lot of those songs are very similar. A lot of them have a big ballad-y kind of song. Ours is different — ours will stand out for being different. There are also a lot of male vocals going on there. We don’t. We have a female vocal. That will differentiate us as well."

Kealy thinks the contest is still wide open and that nobody will be able to call it until the day. Speaking for himself as a music enthusiast and viewer, he does not see Sweden as a threat and isn't worried that they will break Ireland's record of having the most wins of all countries. The Russian song didn't do so much for him either — but he understands that that's just his personal opinion. "I actually like the Icelandic song. It is a bit of a zombie-rock song. They are a visual act. They are a little bit like Lordi, but not as cartoon-ish. But I think the song is really strong. I think it's the dark horse," he says.

Preselection

On 4 October RTÉ has announced that it is inviting accomplished songwriters and performers, with a proven track record of success in the music industry, to submit a song to be considered to represent Ireland in Tel Aviv, Israel next May. Songwriters/composers may only submit one song (including co-writes) for consideration. If more than one song per composer is submitted only the first song received will be considered. The closing date for submissions is 5pm on Friday 23rd of November 2018. Compositions submitted for consideration should follow basic Eurovision rules. Entries were only accepted by email Eurovision2019@rte.ie as an MP3 (192kbps) file.

Executive Producer and Head of Irish delegation Michael Kealy said: "We were really proud of the Irish performance in Lisbon this year, months of work went into planning our Eurovision act, bringing together the various audio and visual elements, from song arrangement to choreography to lighting design. The performance of "Together" by Ryan O'Shaughnessy and dancers Kevin O'Dywer and Alan McGrath with backing vocals from Janet Grogan, Remy Naidoo and Claire Ann Varley received worldwide acclaim when performed on stage and created headlines around the world. "Together" placed 16th in the final which is the best result since Jedward came in eighth place in Dussledorf with "Lipstick" in 2011. For Eurovision 2019 we want to produce a world class act that will do Ireland proud on stage in Tel Aviv and in front of a worldwide audience of nearly 200 million people. TheEurovision song contest is incredibly competitive so we need a top class song, with instant appeal and a highly experienced act who is used to performing live in front of large audiences".

All 430 songs received will be considered by a number of panels including expert music industry panels but RTÉ reserves the absolute right to approach established acts and songwriters and to select a song and/or a performer(s) at its sole discretion from outside this process. RTÉ will have the final say on which song and artist will be Ireland's 2019 entry. RTÉ reserves the right to arrange, produce or otherwise alter any song selected for entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2019.

In August, RTÉ held their second Eurovision forum inviting music industry professionals and Eurovision fans to discuss current trends in the competition as well as hearing from international experts. As well as publicly inviting submissions, RTÉ is actively engaging with professionals in the music industry to ensure that they find the very best entry to represent Ireland.

RTÉ has invited songwriters and performers to submit songs for the Eurovision Song Contest despite calls for the event in Israel to be boycotted. Former winner Charlie McGettigan, former Eurovision presenters Carrie Crowley and Doireann Ní Bhriain, musicians Christy Moore, Mary Black, Paul Brady and Steve Wall and both the Musicians' Union of Ireland and Irish Equity have called for a boycott of Eurovision 2019 in solidarity with the people of Palestine. On Wednesday 26th September, members of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign handed in a petition to RTÉ director-general Dee Forbes with 11,000 signatures calling on the broadcaster to boycott the event in Israel. At the meeting Rory Coveney, Strategic Advisor to the Director General of RTÉ, and Michael Kealy, Head of RTÉ's delegation for Eurovision, were also present. During the meeting the RTÉ representatives stated that they "will take away all that has been said and think about it", and noted that there "will not be any sanction against anyone from within RTÉ who doesn't wish travel on conscientious grounds." RTÉ also said that they are "well aware that the Irish people are very concerned about and supportive of Palestinians" and that they "will not just be covering it as an entertainment event, and bearing in mind everything that has been discussed [they] will be covering it more widely."
On 3 November, The Labour Party has called on RTÉ to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019 if Israel hosts it in Jerusalem. The motion, tabled by LabourYouth, says that "This boycott must stay in place till a peace deal is agreed between Palestine and Israel". The motion was placed on the conference agenda before it was announced that it would be in Tel Aviv.

Paloma Faith, "Ghost" - Ella Henderson, "What I Did For Love" - David Guetta feat. Emeli Sande, "Earned It" - The Weeknd и "If I Were A Boy" - Beyoncé

Видео на трек было снято на Dollymount Strand Кристианом Тирни, который работал с такими артистами, как Hozier, Niall Horan, The Weeknd, Macklemore, Demi Lovato, Kendrick Lamar, Drake и The 1975.
