Bio

25-years old Ester Alexandra Creţu, professionally known as Ester Peony, is a Romanian singer and songwriter. "Peony" is dedication to her mother, named Bujorica meaning peony in Romanian. Her passion for music has emerged since childhood while she lived with her family in Montreal, Canada. Ester started to study jazz singing at the age of eight, and when she returned to Romania four years later, she enrolled in the piano section of Dinu Lipatti School in Piteşti. At age 13, she transferred to classic guitar until the ninth grade, when she continued her studies at the classic singing section. In 2013 she enrolled at the Music Interpretation Faculty in Bucharest where she studied jazz.

In 2014, Ester was spotted online as she was publishing covers of popular songs such as Derniere Danse (Indila) or My Heart Is Refusing Me (Loreen), and offered a contract with a record label in Romania, releasing singles Leyla and Iubire and collaboration with Ana Baniciu, Puya, Doddy, Vescan and Mahia - "Cuminte De Craciun". Ester begins composing music for artists such as DJ Rynno, Sylvia, Tamy and Pepe, both in the mainstream and underground. A year later, she reached radio and TV with the song "Sub aripa ta" (feat. Vescan), which has enjoyed success, staying weeks in a row on the ranks of Romanian radio and music TV stations. It was followed by another track with Vescan, Alan and Kepa - "Oameni".

In 2016, she collaborated with Phelipe and released 1000 de motive, track and video that generated nearly three million views on YouTube. In the summer of 2016, Ester went in her first tour, Noi sa fim sanatosi!, alongside Puya, Vescan, Doddy and Anastasia, organized in the big cities of Romania. In 2017, working as part of creative group with Alexandru Serbu and Emanuela Oancea, Ester also composed for other artists like Dj Rynno feat. Sylvia, Cezar feat. Tamy, DiezZ si Cristina Vasiu, Tamy si Pepe.

At the beginning of 2018, she released EP Dig It, where she was one of the main songwriters, and a few months later, Ester alongside Alexandru Şerbu and Ioana Victoria Badea have written On a Sunday, her winning song in Romania's national selection for the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. The single combines the guitar sound with the fresh lyrics that complement the dark mood with a message: Love becomes dangerous when it is given to the wrong person. Currently Ester continues her singing classes and is working on her first album, to be released in 2019. On 26 February it was announced that Peony signed with Cat Music label, which had several Eurovision entries under its belt: Elena (2009), Mandinga (2012), Voltaj (2015) and Ilinca (2017).

"The message of the song refers to the fact that love is always a risk that you assume and becomes dangerous when you give it to the wrong person. “On A Sunday” describes the sensitive and profound suffering of separation. Somehow, you feel that love is wonderful – despite suffering after a failure in love – because feeling love it is always more beautiful than feeling nothing"

Ester Peony has started rehearsals of her Eurovision 2019 act in TVR studios.

The chair that Ester Peony sang in the National Selection Final will also be on stage in Tel Aviv. It's just a detail of the fiery show designed by director Petre Năstase for the performance in Israel.

Ester Peony, Romania's representative at Eurovision 2019: "I can not wait to get back to Tel Aviv, get on the stage, meet people, see how it works, get us accustomed to it"

Katerine Duska has travelled to Romania as part of her promotional tour for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. While in Bucharest, the singer met with Ester Peony who will be representing Romania in Tel Aviv. Katerine and Ester met in Israel for the first time where they were both filming their postcards.

Two girls who have lived in Canada had a lot to share. Ester also spoke to Greek channel ERT both on her own participation and for the Greek song - see the report here.

"Everything happens on Sundays. My selection in Romania's national final was also Sunday. This day is considered a happy day. But my song talks about the people who suffer on Sundays. I miss Canada, I hope some time to get back there and why not, arrange with Katerina and hang out there"

Before going to an international tour to promote "On the Sunday", Ester Peony, Romanian Eurovision representative, spends much of her time meeting the audience in Romania. The artist was already present at Pulse de Zilei and Telejurnal Matinal and these days she attends the radio studios. The week began with meetings on ProFM and Bucharest FM, on Friday morning she will be present at Digi FM and next week she will appear on Magic FM. Also on Thursday, Ester will be guest of Catalin Măruţă's show on ProTv at 15.00.

Ester Peony, the winner of the national Romania preselection, accepted the challenge at Dimineața Blană of Pro FM radio to pass a test on the Eurovision Song Contest knowledge. Prior to that, she sang an acoustic version of her song "On a Sunday".

Many have wondered where the stage name Ester Peony comes from. Ester Alexandra Creţu explained: "That's what my mother thought of naming me, and Peony comes from peony in English, because mother's name is Bujorica, Peony. I just wanted to make a connection between myself and her. I spent 5-6 years in Canada, I went to school there. Little by little, my mother sent me to singing, that's what happened after I left for Canada in 2001. The first hour of singing was with a jazz singer who taught me different techniques. Easily, I began to listen to a lot of music and inspire myself from different artists so that I could become an artist as well".

Speaking about "On A Sunday" she said: "It is my first Eurovision attempt. I believe very much in this song and as far as I hear from other countries, many are radio songs, just like mine".

In the Eurovision Quiz hosts Mădălina Petre, Sebastian Coţofană and Radu Ţibulcă sang some refrains of the songs with which the Romanian artists participated along the time in the contest. Among the chosen songs were entries by Dan Bittman, Luminița Anghel & Sistem, Elena Gheorghe, Mandinga. You can see how Ester did here.

The video for "On a Sunday" filmed in the historic monument Casa Monteoru on Calea Victoriei will show Ester Peony, Romania's representative at Eurovision, "imprisoned" in a deserted house. Video, directed by Petre Năstase, will be released in ten days.

"The video reflects a toxic relationship with the main character being trapped in a parallel universe — haunted by her own ghost. Igor, the dog, is the house guardian. As I become part of the house, Igor becomes my guardian too", explained Peony.

Preselection

On 20 September Board of Directors of Romanian broadcaster TVR has approved Romanian participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, within the broadcaster's budget approved for 2019.

TVR already has a tradition in organising the Eurovision Romania shows outside its studios in Bucharest. This 2019 edition makes no exception, as the two semi-finals will be organised by two major cities in the West and the East of the country. The semi-finals will take place in Iași at the Polivalenta Hall, on January 27th and in Arad in Sala Sporturilor "Victoria", on February 10th. The Big Final will take place on February 17th 2019, in Bucharest, in a show broadcasted exclusively by TVR. The events will be broadcast live by TVR under the slogan "Fulfil your dream!"

On 9 November, Romanian broadcaster has opened submission period for Selecţia Naţională Eurovision Song Contest (SNESC). Entries are accepted by December 10 online on the TVR website. Participating entries should follow all basic Eurovision rules. Submission package should include: Final version of the song; song lyrics; presentation material (bio, photos, videos); copies of songwriters and singers IDs; live video of song performance a capella.

126 songs were submitted to Eurovision Song Contest Romania, which is 70% increase compared to the previous year. Jury will be evaluating entries on the following criteria: a) the musical form of the contest entry, aiming at the development of the melodic theme, its harmonization, as well as the rhythm-melodic elements that would provide a suitable musical construction; b) the realization of the orchestral arrangement; c) the inventiveness and originality of the theme; d) stylistic diversity of the entries in the contest; e) quality of sound and interpretation. At the preselection stage each jury member will give to each song grades from 1 to 10 with use of .5 permitted. In the case of tie, the song with highest number of marks cloe to maximum will prevail. On 20 December 24 semifinalists of the preselection were named.

The members of the pre-selection jury are: radio producers Bogdan Pavlică, Felix Crainicu (Radio Romania), Răzvan Popescu (Radio Zu), Oliver Simionescu – DJ Olix (Kiss FM), Horea Ghibuțiu, musical journalist- unsitedemuzica.ro, Dragoș Vulgaris, musical journalist - ProFm & Chill FM, Bogdan Miu, journalist, radio producer - DigiFM, George Balint, jurnalist – Musical Reality, Andreea Remețan, radio producer - Virgin , Liana Stanciu, TVR journalist and Gabriel Scîrlet, musical director - TVR.

The songs that will pass the preselection stage will compete in the semifinals, where the jury and the viewers will decide on the finalists. Withdrawal is permitted under the contractual terms agreed with TVR with the reason of withdrawal submitted no later than 24 hours from the announcement of qualifiers.

On 8 January, TVR has also launched search for two wildcards to join the competition semifinals. Only songs that were not entered in the preselection from November 9 to December 10, 2018 can be proposed. Strong reasoning for reasons why they could not participate in the first stage is one of the essential conditions for the analysis of any proposal, to be submitted at eurovision.romania@tvr.ro. Entries will be evaluated on the basis of the same selection criteria, both administrative and artistic, considered in the semi-finalists selection. Deadline to apply was January 10 and winners of wildcards were announced on 11 January being "Army of love," performed by Bella Santiago and "Renegades", performed by Linda Teodosiu. It was earlier announced, that Dan Bittman has withdrawn from the national preselection, stating the fact that he has to be out of the country on the days of the show as the reason. On 12 January, Mihai Traistariu has also withdrawn his entry "Baya" (Mihai Trăistariu, Michael James Down, Will Taylor) in protest over wildcard process. Xandra has also withdrawn her song "Independent" (Alex Luft, Eduard Santha, Denisa Demian, Alexandra Sipoș).

In each semifinal which will take place in January/February, the national jury (where each juror will award points on 12-1 scale) will qualify up to five songs, and the viewers will add one more. As the National Selection organiser, TVR also reserves the right to award one wildard for any preselection show, thus the total number of finalists will be not more than 13.

Adi Cristescu, Mihai Georgescu (Miță), Crina Mardare, Andy Platon and Mugurel Vrabete will decide ten of the finalists of the National Selection 2019. Having a rich experience within the musical industry, the five stars that form the Eurovision Romania national jury will choose ten winners in the semi-finals which will take place in Arad and Iasi. The list of the finalists will be completed by the viewers who will qualify one song for each semi-final, by televoting.

"It is an honour for me to be invited as a member of the jury in the semi-finals of the National Selection. This is my sixth appearance within the Eurovision", has the singer of Bere Gratis band added.

"Eurovision has always been dear programme to me that I have always watched with joy and I am glad that this year I will be part of the selection process for the one who will be chosen to represent us. I am also happy that I will have the opportunity to bring my contribution also in the selection of the songs, of the competitors. It is an honour for me to be part of shows similar to this and I hope this contest will become more and more appreciated by the Romanians for its real value".

Together with Kazibo Music he wins the award for Best Producer both at the Media Music Awards, and at the Radio Romania Musical Awards. At present, Andy is part of the team EPIQ Records.

"Eurovision has been and still is an iconic contest. It represents a very good launching and promotion ramp, to the international music market, both for the new talents and for the already successful artists", has Andy Platon declared. "I am happy with this proposal to be part of the jury in the semi-finals and I see it as recognition of my musical activity. I am really proud that I can have an experienced point of view on the presented songs", has declared Mugurel Vrabete.

The public is voting for 30 minutes and chooses one of the songs which will get in the National Final. There can be voted only once from a phone number for each song. The phone lines will open at the signal "START VOTING!" and will close in 30 minutes, at the signal "STOP VOTING!". The voting will be done by sending the entrance number in the contest of the favourite one (01, 02, 03,...11), by SMS, at 1264 (rate: 0.5 Euro, VAT included), a number available in the Digi Mobil, Orange, Telekom and Vodafone networks, or by calling the same number - 1264 and dialling the number of the favourite song from the contest: (01, 02, 03... 11), at the same rate (0.5 Euro, VAT included / call), available in the Orange, Telekom and Vodafone networks.

For the first time, the national selection will have a national jury for semifinals and an international jury for the final of the competition. Thus, winner will be chosen by joint decision of the televiewers and this international jury with the weight of televoting equal to the weight of one jury member vote. Televoting will be possible not more than one time from the same number to the same entry. In the case of a tie, winner will be decided by TVR in consultation with the international jury. The final jury will include: William Lee Adams and Deban Aderemi (UK), Alex Calancea (Moldova), Șerban Cazan (Romania), Tali Eshkoli (Israel), Emmelie de Forest (Denmark).

Aurelian Temișan and Ilinca Avram will present Eurovision Romania shows. The well-known artist and TVR star will repeat the experience of the Golden Stag International Festival, where they presented the Anniversary Gala. "After a few entries in the National Selection, here I am again in the middle of the Eurovision Song Contest, this time as a presenter. I missed this event and I want to see how artists feel, not being involved in the competition, "Aurelian Temișan said. "I am happy and honored to have received this proposal. Eurovision is one of the most popular contests in the world and it is a great challenge to be part of this exceptional event", said Ilinca Avram.

Netta Barzilai, Emmelie de Forest and Inis Neziri, Grand Prix winner of Golden Stag 2018, will perform as the interval act of the final show. The final attracted 340,000 viewers, being eighth most watched show of the night with only 40,000 between ages of 18 and 49.

For the purpose of the participation of the representative of Romania at the ESC 2019 the organizers are responsible for accommodation and transport costs for both stage artists and up to 2 other persons with documented technical staff (eg: composer, vocal coach, choreographer).

Smaranda Vornicu-Shalit will lead this year's Romanian delegation in Tel Aviv. In 2018, she was part of the International Contest Festival "Golden Stag" as Director of the Festival and, now, she has accepted the challenge of coordinating Romanian delegation at the Eurovision 2019: "It is a great honour and also a great responsibility to be appointed as part of TVR's team for the Eurovision 2019 project. I wish the experience gained during the Golden Stag International Festival would support the common dream that we all have, whether we are talking about artists, fans or the organisers", has Smaranda Vornicu declared. "We all want the best possible result for Romania in the finals in Tel Aviv!".

My Heart Is Refusing Me (Loreen), Kepa - "Oameni".

Sylvia, Cezar feat. Tamy, DiezZ и Cristina Vasiu, Tamy и Pepe.

Видеоклип на песню "On a Sunday" был снят в историческом здании Casa Monteoru на улице Calea Victoriei.

Baya (Mihai Trăistariu, Michael James Down, Will Taylor)
