| Back in 1998, a
relatively unknown artist walked out onto the stage of the "Malta Song for
Europe" contest. Humble and sincere, she sang a song called "The One That I
Love". That performance reached into people’s hearts enough for her to win the
competition and the right to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest in Birmingham.
The artist "Chiara" was born. Unfortunately, the company that she had to sign for did not believe in her ability to succeed. This resulted in a lack of preparation and no promotion campaign. In spite of this, Chiara took to the stage in Birmingham, on 9 May 1998 with a strong and determined personality. She sang her heart out to a rapturous audience. She led the voting process right up to the very end where she was pipped at the post by Dana International in the very last stages of the ever-controversial voting process. She finished in a credible third place. Chiara told in a BBC interview two years later that she cried for several hours in the bathroom of her hotelroom after the lost at Eurovision, but she soon however was very proud of her achievement. When Chiara arrived home on Malta after Eurovision she was met by an estimated 6.000 cheering fans at the Valletta airport. Chiara had become a star and was in demand. However, due to some bad management and a lack of preparation, she missed the international boat and was held back from pursuing the music career that she had dreamed of. Still unable to get herself released from the defunct contract, Chiara spent the next five years in a musical wilderness having only her national market to rely on. During this time she won the ‘Best Female Artist’ at the 1998 Malta Music Awards and released three albums on the local market. Her highlight was performing with Leo Sayer and Boney M in concert in 2000 and 2001 respectively. In 2003, things rapidly changed for the better. Once her contract expired, Chiara was free to choose for herself and was attracted to Bridge Productions. Supported by the undying belief of her father, Chiara worked continuously in the studio on her new album. This album consists of a number of great songs written by internationally-acclaimed songwriters hailing from Sweden, Belgium and the United States – including none other than Diane Warren who is undoubtedly one of the most successful songwriters ever. In the process, she developed her song-writing skills to write the beautiful ballad "Angel" which she entered for the Maltese Song For Europe 2005. With 11,935 votes Chiara won the preselection, this was the first time that a Maltese artist had won the right to sing in Eurovision twice. The months after winning The Song for Europe and before the Eurovision Song Contest, Chiara embarked on her promotional tour and visited many European states including Greece, Belarus, UK, Croatia, Cyprus, Lithuania and Belgium. The reception that Chiara received in these countries was warm and enthusiastic. It was on these trips that Chiara earned the title of "The Voice". At the 50th Eurovision Song Contest held in Kiev, Chiara was rewarded with second place and 192 points… the most points ever gained by Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest, including unbeliavable 12 points from Russia. Chiara gave a great performance of her song and appeared at ease and looked confident on the stage. Although Chiara did not win the contest she did win the Press award for the best song. Chiara gave a short interview to the BBC shortly after the contest had ended. She was a little upset but she was pleased to have beaten her own personal record by coming second. On being asked whether she will participate at the contest again she said "last time I was third, this time I was second, next time I will be first no ??". After the contest Chiara has launched another album, entitled "Here I am". She has been working extensively around the Island and abroad, especially in Greece and Cyprus. Another highlight was the presentation of the Malta Song for Europe and supporting act during a Michael Bolton concert in Malta both in 2008. The most important change in Chiara’s life however was, of course, the birth of her daughter Ebony. The loss of her father late 2008, who had always been very supporting for Chiara, was a tough period, but as a tribute to her father, she was determined even more to achieve another success in her career. congratulations for being selected Maltese representative at Eurovision 2009! Nice to see
you back! What does Eurovision mean to you in general? - It means everything in my career, I had just started when I went the first time so it has given me a lot not only in Malta but in all Europe. - How you have decided to enter the
national selection again, what was the reason for that? -
Was it difficult to win Maltese national final? Whom have you regarded as your main
rivals? -
How can you rate the three songs you’ve been taking part in Eurovision with, any
personal favourite out of these 3? -
What will be your aim in the contest? -
Are you planning to record new versions of the track, other languages, remixes? -
You have already started your promotional tour. Do you think in general that pre-contest

Что Евровидение значит для вас? - Это все в моей карьере. Я только начинала ее, когда я впервые поехала на Евровидение. Оно дало мне многое не только на Мальте, но и во всей Европе. - Как вы решили снова принять участие в национальном отборе, что послужило причиной такого решения? - Я очень упрямая и если я что-то задумаю, то буду добиваться этого до конца. И Евровидение для меня из этой же серии - это проект, который я начала, но еще не закончила. В этом основная причина того, что я решила попробовать вновь. - Тяжело было победить на мальтийском национальном отборе? Кого вы рассматривали в качестве основных конкурентов? - Я участвовала на общих правах со всеми остальными, но я бы соврала, если бы не признала, что я знала, что зрители скорее всего проголосуют за меня, потому что мальтийская публика гордится моими прошлыми достижениями на этом конкурсе. Мне очень нравились Q и Ракела, у которой очень хороший голос. - Как бы вы описали вашу песню "What If We" в одной фразе? - Мощная и зрелая баллада. - Как бы вы расставили три песни, с которыми вы принимали участие в Евровидении? worked over the past months…and years. Leading Maltese fashion designers, Charles and
Ron from C&R will be taking care of her outfits. Chiara’s team also includes award
winning fashion make up artist, Diane Nikolic, OPI nail technician Angele Stafrace and
hairstylists Alexander’s (Gzira) and Warren Tabone. Charles & Ron designs are for women who not only love fashion, but also have a passion for life; confident women who like to be noticed'. The C&R collections are inspired by ‘Silver Screen Hollywood Glamour’ and have a distinct Mediterranean influence. 'Our trademark is that any design has a couture edge to it, because there must always be an element of glamour’, say Charles & Ron, who have established themselves as Malta's leading fashion house, specializing in evening and wedding couture. Over the past few years they participated in many fashion events in Naples, Milan, Rome, Ragusa, Amsterdam, Greece and Toronto. Their bi-annual fashion show is Malta’s most anticipated fashion event, and for their work in Malta and abroad, they have received three awards at the Malta National Fashion Awards. Award winning fashion make up artist, Diane Nikolic, is eager for all women to look their best. She has recently launched her very own beauty clinic, Glow. ‘I’ve studied make-up here in Malta and in Manchester, however it’s got to be in you. Nowadays make-up is more about creating a shape than just adding colour, it’s about shading. The industry is giving us some really good make-up. an interview with Liza Petersen from Melodigrandprixfans.dk, the site of the Danish OGAE
club, it was revealed that Chiara, Malta’s representative in this year’s Eurovision
song contest, will leave her child in Malta during the Eurovision week as she needs to
concentrate completely on her task in Moscow. "If I remember correct – you are also a mother now. Will you bring your child to Moscow?”, asked Lisa from Melodigrandprixfans.dk to the Maltese singer. Chiara replied: “No I would love to have her with me but I feel that if she is there I will not be able to concentrate completely on my job there and if she stays here with family I will be more relaxed knowing she is taken care off as best as she can be". MFCC in Ta'Qali will host this year’s national final on Saturday 7th February 2009
giving the opportunity to over 4,000 people to attend this festival. For the first time,
PBS have taken over this year’s whole organisation and production of this acclaimed
festival. PBS is not only doing it’s outmost to produce a quality show but has managed
to make it accessible to all by maintaining a low ticket price. Malta entries are accepted
on 13-14 of October, foreign songwriters allowed on equal opportunities basis. By 2nd of
November 56 songs will be chosen, which will be be presented in series of shows, between
8th November and 10th January. Jury will choose 15 entries and 5 will be added by
televoting. 20 songs will compete in the national final. Jury will choose 3 songs for
super-final, where winner will be selected by jury and televoting. Update: 182 entries have been received. List of 56 semifinalists is available here. Semifinals "Euroshow Box" of 7 entries each are scheduled for 8, 15, 29/11, 6, 13, 20/12, 3, 10/01. The qualifiers will be only announced in the end of the last Euroshow box heat. Final will take place on February 7th. |
