| Turkey will be represented by rock
band Athena when they host the Eurovision Song Contest next May. Now they will submit
three or four songs for a televised national selection which will air on 24th of January.
TRT have expressed a preference for the songs short-listed to be in English, although
previously the group has only ever recorded in Turkish. Viewers will this year be allowed
to televote for the song they feel should represent the home team in Istanbul this May. The four man group have recently had considerable success in the Turkish pop charts with their soft punk/ska style music. Two of the members of the band are brothers. Athena reached the top three with a song supporting the national basket ball team, Oniki Dev Adam, (Twelve giant men). |

| In 1987, Hakan and Gokhan Ozoguz
brothers, who were about 11 years old began working hard by receiving guitar-playing
lessons from Umit Yilbar, ex-guitarist of “Pentagram”, and after that they looked for
the bass guitarist and the batterist, with whom the band would be done - this can be
considered as a starting point in Athena history. The first serious team of the group could at last be formalized in 1990 after many changes. Gokhan and Hakan accelerated their works after Turgay Gulaydin (battery) and Asrin (bass guitar) joined them. The 7-songs demo, “Punished Society” was recorded. Athena took stage in the Bostanci Show Center on 14 June, 1992 as the sub-group of the German thrash giant, namely Tankard which visited Turkey to give a concert here. They launched “One Last Breath”, the first thrash sound album in 1993. Bass guitarist Asrin Tuncer left the group a short while before this album was launched. Hakan Ozoguz performed all bass plays in the album. Meanwhile, Asrin’s empty place was filled with Ozan Karacuha. The 1994 summer is known as a very critical period in the Athena history which opened new doors before the group. The group became the stars of the different Istanbul bars where they were playing. Holigan’s works started in 1997. In that time, the music companies did not accepted to publish the album since the music in it was not familiar to the audience in Turkey. On the other hand, NR1 was such a company that gave chance to alternative projects, and thus the first music project of the company was the Holigan. The album was launched in the spring of 1998 Athena started a wide Turkey tour just after they launched the Holigan album in 1999. One of the important moments of the tour was that Athena took stage as the sub-group of the famous Rolling Stones in the Ali Sami Yen stadium. In the same year, Athena who accelerated their album making efforts felt in disagreement with the NR1 company and the two parties departed. Tam Zamani Simdi album was launched in November 1999 with the label of the Universal company. It was seen in this album that Athena became master of their sound had created their own style. Athena were invited to the Popkomm Festival which is held in Koln of Germany every year. The new Germany concerts was realized in three different cities of the country in the year 2001. One of the significant moments in the Athena career was the 12 Giand Men project which became the march of our basketball team. The Turkish Basketball Federation demanded a march, and it was decided the only name who could manage this task was Athena. The 12 Giant Men song was added to the Tam Zamani Simdi album, and the new copies of the album was launched in this format. As the year 2001 was to end, some changes occurred in the Athena team. Ozan Karacuha and Turgay Gulaydin left the group, and in the early 2002, new members of the group, Canay Cengen (bass guitar) and Dogac Titiz (battery) took their places in the Athena team, and the the group started the works of the next album. Athena launched their new album Her Sey Yolunda (Everything is OK) in the month April. After that, the group flied to the United States together with our national basketball team for the World Basketball Championship. Athena concerts will go on during the whole summer. Meanwhile, Hakan and Gokhan Ozoguz departed their ways from Canay Cengen whom they thought they could not share their feelings and mentality. Было записано 7 трековое демо - "Punished Society". Athena выступила на разогреве у гиганта трешевой музыки немецкой группы Танкард, во время ее концертов в Турции. Далее был записан первый трешевый альбом с названием "Последний вздох". Басист Асрин Тунчер покинул группу вскоре после записи, его место занял Озан Карачуха. Лето 1994 года стало очень знаменательным периодом в истории группы, которая получила многочисленные предложения выступлений в стамбульских барах. В 1997 году началась работа над новым альбомом - Хулиган. Многие лейблы отказались работать с альбомом, так как музыка, исполняемая группой была не очень знакома турецкой аудитории. Однако грппе удалось заключить договор с компанией НР1, которая специализировалась на альтернативных проектах и альбом увидел свет весной 1998 года. В 1999 году группа отправилась в тур по стране. Также они приняли участие в туре группы Роллинг Стоунз. В этом же году произошел разрыв с лейблом НР1 и следующий альбом - Tam Zamani Simdi был выпущен в ноябре 1999 года лейблом Юниверсал. По этому альбому видно, что группа окончательно пришла к своему собственному неповторимому стилю. Группа приняла участие в фестивале в Кольне, Германия в 2001 году. Одним из наиболее значительных моментов в истории группы стал проект "12 гигантов" в поддержку национальной сборной по баскетболу. Было решено, что никто не справится с написанием баскетбольного гимна лучше чем Афина. Сингл "12 гигантов" был включен в переиздание предыдущего альбома группы. В конце 2001 года в группе произошли небольшие изменения - Озан Карачуха и Тургай Гулайдын покинули группу и в начале 2002 года их место заняли Чанай Ченген (бас) и Догач Титиз (ударные). В этом составе группа начала работу над новым альбомом. Альбюм Her Sey Yolunda (Все ОК) вышел в апреле. Группа направилась в США на чемпионат мира по баскетболу. Далее последовали туры по стране и многочисленные концерты. Тем временем, Чанай Ченген не ужился в составе команды и на его место пришел новый басист - Озан Муслуоглу.
